Carcassonne - France - Unesco World Heritage Site
Duration : 108 Seconds

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department, of which it is the prefecture, in the former province of Languedoc. It is separated into the fortified Cité de Carcassonne and the more expansive lower city, the ville basse. The folk etymology -- involving a châtelaine named Carcas, a ruse ending a siege and the joyous ringing of bells ("Carcas sona") - though memorialized in a neo-Gothic sculpture of Mme. Carcas on a column near the Narbonne Gate, is of modern invention. The fortress, which was thoroughly restored in 1853 by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.[1] The name can be derived as a hyperbole of name Carcas. Similarly in Italian language, there are derived names like Castellino (little castle) - Castello - Castellone (big castle), or Ombrellino (small umbrella) - Ombrello - Ombrellone (large umbrella). A double 's' in the name appears for phonetic reasons, otherwise as a self standing 's' it would be pronounced as 'zFirst signs of settlement in this region have been dated to about 3500 BC, but the hill site of Carsac -- a Celtic place-name that has been retained at other sites in the south -- became an important trading place in the 6th century BC. The Volcae Tectosages fortified the oppidum. Carcassonne became strategically identified when Romans fortified the hilltop around 100 BC and eventually made it the colonia of Julia Carsaco, later Carcasum (the process of swapping ...

Versailles - France - Unesco World Heritage Site
Duration : 113 Seconds

Versailles is a city renowned for its château, the Palace of Versailles, was the de facto capital of the kingdom of France for over a century, from 1682 to 1789. It is now a wealthy suburb of Paris and remains an important administrative and judicial centre. Located in the western suburbs of the French capital, 17.1 km (10.6 mi) from the centre of Paris, the commune of Versailles is the préfecture (administrative seat) of the Yvelines department. According to the 2006 census, the population of the city is 89490 inhabitants, down from a peak of 94145 in 1975. Versailles is historically known for numerous treaties such as Treaty of Paris (1783), which ended the American Revolutionary War and the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War IThe etymology of Versailles is clear that the argument tends to privilege the Latin word versare, meaning "to keep turning, turn over and over",[1] expression used in medieval times for plowed lands, cleared lands (lands that had been repeatedly "turned over"). This word formation is similar to Latin seminare ("to sow") which gave French semailles ("sowings", "sown seeds"). During the Revolution of 1788, city officials had proposed to the Convention to rename Versailles Berceau-de-la-Liberté ("Cradle of Liberty"), but they had to retract their proposal when confronted with the objections of the majority of the population. A seat of power From May 1682, when Louis XIV moved the court and government permanently to Versailles, until his ...

Chartres and its Cathedral - France - UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Duration : 115 Seconds

Chartres is built on the left bank of the Eure River, on a hill crowned by its famous cathedral, the spires of which are a landmark in the surrounding country. To the south-east stretches the fruitful plain of Beauce, the "granary of France", of which the town is the commercial centre. [edit] History Chartres was one of the principal towns of the Carnutes, and by the Romans was called Autricum, from the river Autura (Eure), and afterwards civitas Carnutum. The name "Chartres" derives from "Carnutes". It was burnt by the Normans in 858, and unsuccessfully besieged by them in 911. During the Middle Ages it was the chief town of Beauce, and gave its name to a countship which was held by the counts of Blois and Champagne and afterwards by the house of Châtillon, a member of which in 1286 sold it to the crown. It was raised to the rank of a duchy in 1528 by Francis I. After the time of Louis XIV the title of duke of Chartres was hereditary in the family of Orléans. In 1417 it fell into the hands of the English, from whom it was recovered in 1432. It became seat of a Duchy in 1528. During the Wars of Religion, it was attacked unsuccessfully by the Protestants in 1568, and was taken in 1591 by Henry IV, who was crowned there three years afterwards. In the Franco-Prussian War it was seized by the Germans on 2 October 1870, and continued during the rest of the Campaign to be an important centre of operations. The city suffered heavy damage by bombing in the course of World War II ...

French city of Albi added to World Heritage List
Duration : 53 Seconds

The medieval city of Albi has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the banks of the Tarn river in south-west France, the old city of Albi reflects the culmination of a medieval architectural and urban ensemble. Today the Old Bridge (Pont-Vieux), the Saint-Salvi quarter and its church are testimony to its initial development (10th -11th centuries). Following the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar heretics (13th century) it became a powerful episcopal city. Built in a unique southern French Gothic style from local brick in characteristic red and orange colours, the lofty fortified Cathedral (late 13th century) dominates the city, demonstrating the power regained by the Roman Catholic clergy. Alongside the Cathedral is the vast bishop's Palais de la Berbie, overlooking the river and surrounded by residential quarters that date back to the Middle Ages. The Episcopal City of Albi forms a coherent and homogeneous ensemble of monuments and quarters that has remained largely unchanged over the centuries. † Gothic French Music 1976 Malicorne
Duration : 222 Seconds

The group was originally formed by Gabriel Yacoub who is the founder with Mary Yacoub, Hughes de Courson and Laurent Vercambre. Gabriel and Marie had released an album in 1973, Pierre de Grenoble, which led to the creation of MALICORNE Gabriel Yacoub was formerly part of the group of Alan Stivell. By his own admission, he decided to choose to perform songs from the French heritage rather than singing in Breton or Gaelic languages in an artificial manner, even artificial. He left the group to found Alan Stivell Malice in 1974. Their influence in the folk wave of the 1970s was important in France, alongside more traditional groups like La Bamboche and Celtic music of Alan Stivell. The group was characterized by the use of both folk and electroacoustic instruments. Their arrangements were an illustration of the Folk-style progressive rock. For the texts, they did the same call to the fund that folk compositions. Roda-Gil, a famous songwriter, contributed to swings in fire, the penultimate album of original group. This originality allowed them to survive a little longer than others, until early 1980 (after the fashion folk), while in the course of the evolution of the group, some members began solo careers

Prussia vs. Napoleonic France (Nazi Propaganda)
Duration : 490 Seconds

EUROPEAN HERITAGE LIBRARY WWW.EUROHERITAGE.NET Scenes of German Nazi propaganda depicting the German defense of the Prussian city of Kolberg against Napoleonic French invasion. In the last weeks of World War II, Hitler and Goebbels recreated this heroic defense in order to inspire a battered and shattered nation to fight and die for the Reich at all costs. Laughably, when both spoke of "Total War" -- that all resources should be for the war only -- thousands of men and millions of dollars were pulled from the front to produce this film. Equitation in the French tradition
Duration : 591 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2011 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Equitation in the French tradition is a school of horseback riding that emphasizes harmonious relations between humans and horses. Practised throughout France and elsewhere, its most widely known community is the Cadre Noir of Saumur, based at the National School of Equitation. Here horsemen learn to combine human demands with respect for the horse's body and mood. Riders desire to establish close relations with the horse and work towards achieving 'lightness'. There is strong cooperation between generations and respect for the experience of older riders. Country(ies): France © 2009 Ecole Nationale d'Equitation Duration: 00:09:50 - Support: DVD (0044000005)
