This is a haunting poem (In Finnish) by Swedish-speaking Finnish Poet Edith Södergran (1892-1923). The music is by Catalonian composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987). Life I, my own prisoner, say so: life is not the springtime clad in light green velvet, or a caress that one seldom receives, life is not a resolve to go or two white arms that hold one back. Life is the narrow ring that holds us captive, the invisible circle we never cross, life is nearby happiness that passes us by, and the thousand steps we cannot bring ourselves to take. Life is to despise oneself and to lie motionless on the bottom of a well and to know that the sun is shining up there and golden birds are flying through the air and the days swift as arrows are shooting by. Life is to wave a short farewell and go home and sleep . . Life is to be a foreigner to oneself and a new mask for every other person who comes. I noticed a remarkable similarity between a Finnish (originally Swedish) hymn "Koska valaissee kointähtönen" and Tolkien's "In Western Lands beneath the Sun" (sung by Sam in Mordor, from The Lord of the Rings). They're thematically quite alike: a person on a nightly journey knows that the star(s) are still shining, even though he can't see the light, and won't give up his hope of seeing the source of the illumination. I translated the first two stanzas of this hymn by Anders Odhelius (1745, translated to Finnish first in 1790) to English (here's the full English translation: www.petritikka.com ). It is accompanied by the Finnish version. Here's the full original lyrics: evl.fi The melody is a variant from the region of Savo (adapted by Ahti Sonninen). Quite serendipitously, it also fits well into the Finnish melody. I first sing the hymn in English, then the original Finnish and finally Tolkien's poem (below you can also see the Finnish translation by Panu Pekkanen). ******* Oh, when will the morning star ascend, light up this beggar poor? Oh, when will the nightly journey end? It is still dark, obscure. Towards the skies I all the time lift up my longing eyes. Though I dont see the light sublime, I know it never dies. Uuno Kailas (1901-1933) is one of the greatest Finnish poets. This video is based on his poem 'Verkossa' (In the Net). Kailas was born in Heinola, Finland, and died in Nice in tuberculosis.
