Turku is one of the 2011 European Capitals of Culture. The city is hoping the title will create new opportunities; shipbuilding was once Turku's main source of income - now, the industry is in decline.More than 8000 jobs are directly dependent on the shipbuilding industry in Turku. But big orders have dried up. With that in mind, some residents feel that this city of 175000 -- where unemployment is at 10 percent - has more pressing concerns than profiling itself as one of Europe's Culture Capitals. But others take a different view; they're hoping to attract new creative talent to Turku in a bid to relaunch the city as a cultural hub.

Chintelligens began as a way to pay tribute to the great country of Finland. Drawing strongly from pop media influences from within the culture, Sir Ender and Conductor Conductor found particular merit with the Finnish hip-hop group Fintelligens; particularly the song entitled "Mikä Boogie", though nobody can pinpoint the exact reason. It might have been the funky-ass beats, dank rhythm, or straight ill vibe — possibly a combination of all three. Sisu. guts, determination, persistance, strength and stubborness. It is a word that is indescribable, but Finns exhibit this Sisu in their hearts and lives. This weekend, the Finn Grand Fest 2010 was held in Sault Ste. Marie. The festival is an international celebration of Finnish culture, as it combines Finnlanders, partial Finns and Finns in spirit together from Canada, USA and Finland. Events are held across the city as the Soo (Sault Ste. Marie) celebrates the strong Finnish culture in Northern Ontario and Michigan's upper peninsula. Being an international event, it will be held in San Diego, California next year. Along with a market, concerts, and a lot of swimming and saunas, one of the most popular events, is the Wife Carrying Contest. This traditionally involves carrying the wife or the girlfriend through a series of obstacles. The traditional method of holding the wife, upside and on the back is generally the standard way of carrying her across water and hay bales. One of the other events, involved a wheel barrow race, where the husbands carried the wives in a wheelbarrow and then the wives carried the husbands in wheelbarrows. The winner of the wife carrying contest won some money from the sponsor, Kone Cranes, and the winner of the wheelbarrow race, won the wheelbarrow from Soo Mill. Turku is the birthplace of Finnish culture. Its success story began in 1229, when it became a bishop's seat and the Swedish king had a fortress built to protect the city and also to control the power of the Church. Finland was a Swedish province until 1809. Due to its strategic location, the city of Turku played an important role. A total of 13 Swedish kings resided in the city at various times during their visits to the south of Finland and they were well protected by the high towers and mighty walls of its fortress. In 1809, the Danes attacked and plundered various regions of Turku and laid siege to its cathedral for five days and in the 18th century, the army of the Russian Tsar also ravaged the city. Turku is often referred to as the birthplace of Finnish culture and its historic buildings most certainly provide a fascinating insight into its colorful past.

The Finland Pavilion "Kirnu" is surrounded by a lake, appearing to float on the water. It has the slogan "Sharing Inspiration," where ideas can meet and mix. The design draws inspiration from Finnish nature. Elements reinterpreted in the pavilion include the shape of small rocks found on coastal islands, the surface of a fish, reflection on water, framed view of the sky and smell of tar on wood. Pavilion Display Finland attempts to capture the ideas of freedom, creativity, innovation, community, health and nature in its exhibition. The Exhibition Story extends through three spaces: the Welcoming introduces essences of Finland as well as the Virtual Guide (aka Spirit of Finland), accompanying the guest along the exhibition. The second area opens up breathtaking magical landscapes, attached to the foundations of Finland: nature, national character, society, economy, education and culture. The third area is named City of Dreams, an interactive and beautiful presentation of elements of Better Life, as well as solutions and perspectives Finland wants to share. The architecture of the exhibition is functional and clean, serves as a background to present art, design and high technology. The flooring of best-quality Finnish wood and beautifully lit snow-cave or cloudlike structures in the air connects the spacial elements, along with one of the largest textile artworks in the world on the inner wall.
