Finnish Americans in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (in Finnish and English)
Duration : 264 Seconds

In English and Finnish The greatest concentration of Finnish Americans is in Michigan Upper Peninsula. One of the most puzzling things about The Upper Peninsula is that Finnish-Americans still cherish their roots. The opening of several copper mines in the area brought thousands of Finnish emigrants in the area between 1900 and 1910. The descendants of those early Finns still live in the area and many of them speak Finnish, even though they may have never even visited Finland. Andrea tells me though, that it is a tradition among these Finns to make at least once-in-a-lifetime sojourn to the land of their ancestors. We met local Finnish retirees at Suomi Restaurant in Hancock. They came from various backgrounds, having made their careers in business, civil engineering and farming. They have also kept their forefathers' faiths, whether Lutheran or Laestadian. Most of the footage was taken at Hancock, Michigan, a city of 4600 residents on the North shore of Portage Lake. It also has the title of the northernmost City in Michigan. Finnish influence in Hancock is everywhere. One can see it just by walking down its streets. The street signs are both in English and Finnish, and there are Finnish flags in each street corner. I would soon learn, that many of the locals also speak Finnish. Loituma "Eriskummainen kantele"
Duration : 222 Seconds

www.facebook.com Loituma is a young quartet who combine the Finnish vocal tradition with the exquisite sounds of the kantele (Finnish harp). At ease with four-part unaccompanied vocals as well as four-part kantele instrumentals, Loituma were selected Band of the Year at the 1997 Kaustinen Folkmusic Festival. Over the years, the group has persistently followed its own musical path, skillfully applying different musical influences to its music. It has bravely dived into musical streams of diverse origins. One of the cornerstones of Finnish folk music is the art of singing. Stories and feelings are best conveyed through this instrument. The songs convey the Finnish heritage, aided in the background by Martti Pokela and Toivo Alaspää. Another cornerstone of Loituma is the Kantele, which rings in a splendid and varied way on this recording. Iron and silver clink, rye and wheat bloom side by side.

Sweden and Finland Celebrate Separation
Duration : 118 Seconds

The year 2009 marks 200 years since the break up of the two Nordic countries Sweden and Finland. This week Swedish royalty gathered together with the Finnish president and both governments jointly celebrated their common heritage. Here's more from our correspondents. In Stockholm, prominent leaders and royalties together celebrate the mark of the two countries as seperate nations. It was also to mark the two countries good relations and their prosperous developement. Before 1809 Sweden & Finland had been one country for 600 years. In 1809 the Russian Tzar Alexander, with the support of the French emperor Napoleon, defeated Sweden in a large war and made Finland an åttonomus region under Russia. This marked the beginning of Sweden and Finland as separate countries but still with lots in common in their cultural and institutional heritage. [Per Unckel, Stockholm Mayor] "1809 Sweden lost one third of its country to Russia, thats formally what happened after the war in 1809. But more important, 1809, could be seen both in Sweden and in Finland as the birth of the two nations, Finland and Sweden, as they are today. These are two small countries in a world perspective, its five-six million people I Finland, and 9 million people in Sweden. But we are 15 million people together. We have some of the best businesses in the world when it comes to ICT. I guess that whats you think when you combine Ericsson and Nokia, we are not ashemed to meet anybody with that combination [Per ...

Rakkaus ("Only Love - L'amour en Heritage", cover in Finnish) - Maggie
Duration : 256 Seconds

Rakkaus (Only Love - L'amour en heritage, säveltänyt Vladimir Cosma, sanoittanut Pierre Delanoë 1984, suomenkieliset sanat Chrisse Johansson) Rakkaus muistoja synnyttää, rakkaus menneitä säilyttää. The Ecosins of Pentti Linkola
Duration : 483 Seconds

An interview w Engl transl of Pentti Linkola, 76, in his old Ritvala homestead in August 2009 in a Finnish YLE TV program Ajankohtainen Kakkonen series Summer farm hand (Kesärenki). Pentti Linkola is a radical environmentalist, a famous dissident ecophilosopher, and a fisherman in Finland. Linkola has written and lectured widely about his ideas for five decades and is highly respected in his home country. He lives materially simple life. He still fishes in winter time on Lake Vanajavesi. Linkola blames humans for the continuous degradation of the environment. He promotes an eventual decline in human population in order to combat problems commonly attributed to overpopulation. He strongly promotes deindustrialization and opposes democracy for being the agent of wasteful capitalism and consumerism. He regards the proponents of economic growth to be dogmatic and ignorant of the subtle destructive effects of free market policy over the past two centuries. Linkola has founded Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation (Luonnonperintösäätiö) and its co-organization Ikimetsän ystävät (Friends of Ancient Forest) to save and hoster ancient untouched forests in Finland. He also is a member of a deepecological Elonkehä (the oldest cultrue magazine in Finland) and VESL, Vihreän elämänsuojelun Liitto (Green Life Protection Union) that is the oldest Finnish green organization.

Mistreat Stand For Your Nation
Duration : 254 Seconds

Lyrics: Loosy cartoons all day long, its the same thing everywhere. Kids lose their emotions, they got cold cause they dont care. They dont know how to read and write, but the sure can watch the screen. They turn to little Yankee boys, cause its all theyve ever seen. Theres nothing wrong with the RocknRoll or with the USA, but when it threats our culture - were going the wrong way. Its like an invasion, they crush us with their might. We do sing in English too, but just to get the message right. Stand for your Nation stand for your ways! Support your inheritage cause its where the future lays! Open your eyes, cause the TV lies or our culture wont survive! Things just cant goon like this, we need alternitives. We cant lose our identity, if we wanna live. Kids andore Americans, they dont know about their land. This is Europe not the States, dont they understand? Stand for your Nation stand for your ways! Support your inheritage cause its where the future lays! Open your eyes, cause the TV lies or our culture wont survive! Stand for your Nation stand for your ways! Support your inheritage cause its where the future lays! Open your eyes, cause the TV lies or our culture wont survive! Stand for your Nation stand for your ways!
