National Geographic Islands: Fiji
Duration : 2705 Seconds

Fiji (sometimes called the Fiji Islands), is a Melanesian country in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand and consists of an archipelago that includes 332 islands, a handful of which make up most of the land area, and approximately 110 of which are inhabited. Fiji straddles the 180 degree longitude line (which crosses land on a remote tip of Vanua Levu and again near the centre of Taveuni), so the international date line jogs east, placing Fiji all in one time zone and "ahead" of most of the rest of the world. Fiji is the product of volcanic mountains and warm tropical waters. Its majestic and ever-varied coral reefs today draw tourists from around the world, but were the nightmare of European mariners until well into the 19th century. As a result, Fijians have retained their land and often much of the noncommercial, sharing attitude of people who live in vast extended families with direct access to natural resources. When it came, European involvement and cession to Britain was marked by the conversion to Christianity, the cessation of brutal tribal warfare and cannibalism, and the immigration of a large number of indentured Indian laborers, who now represent nearly half of the population, as well as smaller numbers of Europeans and Asians. Today, Fiji is a land of tropical rainforests, coconut plantations, fine beaches, fire-cleared hills. For the casual tourist it is blessedly free of evils such as malaria, landmines ...

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama adresses the media on the Great Council of Chiefs or GCC
Duration : 201 Seconds

Fiji's President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has approved decrees that formally de-establish the Great Council of the Chiefs (GCC)—an institution created by the British during colonialism, and one that in modern times has become politicised to the detriment of Fiji's pursuit of a common and equal citizenry. "The Great Council of the Chiefs is a product of our colonial past and Fiji must now focus on a future in which all Fijians are represented on the same basis," said Prime Minister Bainimarama. "If all Fijians are to have their say during the consultations for Fiji's new constitution, we must ensure every voice is equally heard and equally represented", Prime Minister Bainimarama said. In 1875, the British under colonialism created an elite body of iTaukei Chiefs known as the "Native Council" to directly and indirectly implement its rule over Fiji. The members of this body, which later came to be called the Great Council of Chiefs, held certain privileges. Prime Minister Bainimarama said that over the last 20 years or so, the GCC, including its secretariat, became highly politicised, with its members having political affiliations and membership in political parties. Unfortunately, this resulted in the GCC and its members unduly involving themselves in national politics and/or taking advantage of the GCC's traditional role to assert personal or political agenda. "Fiji's iTaukei heritage is a distinct and fundamental aspect of Fiji—this cannot be denied; however, as an ...

Fiji China Relations Farewell to HE Dr Han Zhiqiang.avi
Duration : 482 Seconds

China respects Fiji's sovereignty June 10 2011: China respects Fiji sovereignty, not like countries that continue to bully Fiji, says the outgoing Chinese ambassador Dr Han Zhiqiang. Dr Han said China believed Fiji had the right to resolve its own issue as a sovereign nation. China will not take sides in continuously condemning and pressuring Fiji to make decisions like Australia and New Zealand. "Fiji and China are perfect brothers in the international arena and we respect each other's sovereignty," he said. "My government (China) attaches great importance to our bilateral ties. It is our determined policy and we are committed to do so. "No matter what may happen in the international politics, China will always be pro --Fiji and support Fiji and treat Fiji like a friend indeed." He said Fiji and China could work together to address a lot of issues affecting both countries. "Fiji and China are both developing countries and face similar challenges and tasks, thus we understand each other," Dr Han said. Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said Dr Han needed to be commended for playing a pivotal role in developing our bilateral relations. "China's support to the Engaging the Pacific meeting hosted by our Prime Minister in 2010 and the support for the Melanesian Spearhead Group Summit hosted in March, are instances of China responding to short term needs of Fiji that came outside of any agreed framework of development cooperation, and that this was possible is ...
