Participation preserves culture. The Participatory 3D Geographic Information System from Fiji is a collaborative resource used for the planning and preservation of intangible cultural heritage on the island. Participatory learning and action methods are combined with Geographic Information Technologies and Systems to compose and record peoples' spatial knowledge in the forms of virtual or physical, 2 or 3 dimensional maps. These maps are used as interactive means for discussion, information exchange and analyses as well as for as support in advocacy, decision making and action taking in the communities. Mapping cultural assets help to protect them and to develop resource management and preservation plans for those communities in Fiji.

The waitress comes over to him and he points to the menu in slight confusion, before she suggests a dish. When she brings it out to him, Jale struggles with the chopsticks. Later, Jale enters a clothes shop where the Indian tailor sells him a shirt. Unable to pay his rent, he visits his cousin Adriu in the medical labs where he expresses his unhappiness. The voice-over narrates that the city can be more lonely than a small island for a young man with not enough money.

Two Men of Fiji (1959): Clip 1 on ASO - Australia's audio and visual heritage online. aso.gov.au Clip 1: Village life in Fiji Curators clip description by Poppy de Souza As cousins Jale and Adriu break open coconuts in their village, they talk about what life in Suva might be like. While Jale is interested in the girls, Adriu says hell be too busy to worry about that hes going to study to be a medical officer. Jale says he wishes he had brains like Adriu. Villagers are shown building a house made from coconut palms, leaves and reeds. Some of the men make twine from coconut fibre. Women make mats for the floors. As the camera focuses on the different jobs of the villagers, the voice-over mentions that they never seem to have enough men for the work as the young men like to leave for the city life of Suva. The women are shown fishing and some of them blacken their eyes with charcoal to deflect the glare of the sunlight. Jales cousin Serena is one of the women fishing. Jale and Adriu ride towards the beach and Jale comes up behind his cousin and playfully surprises her. Curators notes Jale and Adriu are contrasting characters. Adriu is the smart one he is about to go to study in Suva to be a medical officer. Jale is just interested in seeing all the girls. When Jale follows his cousin to Suva later on in the film, his experience of the city is less fulfilling than Adrius. Two Men of Fiji (1959): Clip 2 on ASO - Australia's audio and visual heritage online. aso.gov.au Clip 2: Traditions and customs Curators clip description by Poppy de Souza To give a feast for the visiting Commissioner, the villagers use vines to catch thousands of fish. It is a community effort, with each villager given a role. They make a big circle around part of the lagoon and tie vines together which stretch over a mile. As the soundtrack swells with a cappella voices, the villagers encircle the fish. The catch is brought ashore and spread out. The ceremony for welcoming guests begins with the giving of token gifts. The Commissioner sits in a chair watching the ceremony while the narrator of the film (Ravuama Vunivalu) sits beside him. Vunivalu explains in voice-over how he likes to see his people take pride in their customs. Curators notes The position of Ravuama Vunivalu within his village community is unclear. He is not the village chief, yet he is shown in this clip sitting beside the Commissioner. It is the only moment in the documentary where the narrator is shown on screen.
