Preceding the interview are clips from a field trip to Makogai Island by the ACIAR Review Team. Makogai was the site of a new giant clam hatchery and ocean nursery. ACIAR is the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, which provided partial funding for the establishment of the Makogai clam hatchery and for the nationwide survey of natural giant clam stocks in Fiji. Especially noteworthy is the observation by Dr. Lewis of the recent local extinction of the largest giant clam, Tridacna gigas, on Fiji's reefs and attempts to re-establish populations of this species through the introduction of maricultured juvenile T. gigas from Australia. Mariculturist Esaroma Ledua of the Fiji Fisheries Department, pictured in the video, completed a month-long training course in giant clam mariculture offered by the Micronesian Mariculture Demonstration Center (MMDC) in Palau in October-November, 1987. On July 23, 1985, the MMDC Giant Clam Hatchery shipped 500 juveniles of Tridacna derasa to Fiji. Their mean length at the time of shipment was 20.4 mm. STORY: The flooding that has killed at least eight people in Fiji, is beginning to subside but the Pacific island nation remains in a state of emergency. Thousands have been forced to flee their homes after severe storms hit the west coast over the weekend. Curfews have been imposed in an attempt to prevent looting of flooded homes and businesses. The water rose up to three meters in some areas. Government officials appeared to suggest human responsibility for the crisis but did not elaborate. "We can see all the fatalities, casualties, during this flooding. It is all due to negligence of someone." Some parts of the country have seen their worst flooding in decades after rivers burst their banks, destroying crops. The flooded areas include Fiji's main sugar cane-producing region. The government is now worried about outbreaks of disease as people may drink contaminated water. And weather forecasters are warning of more to come with further heavy rain and strong winds predicted during Wednesday and Thursday.
