A court in Ethiopia has sentenced two Swedish journalists to 11 years in prison. Reporter Martin Schibea and photographer Johan Persson were captured in July after entering Ethiopia's disputed Ogaden province accompanied by rebel fighters. The two have been found guilty of helping a rebel group and of entering the country illegally. Al Jazeera's Peter Sharp reports.

The two illegally crossed into Ethiopia with a group of rebels. They were caught in a security operation that killed 15 insurgents. On Wednesday, two Swedish journalists have been charged with promoting terrorism. They illegally crossed into Ethiopia's Somali Region with rebels in July. The two are expected to appear in court in October. Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye entered the province from neighboring Somalia with a team of fighters from the Ogaden National Liberation Front, or ONLF. They were subsequently wounded in a security operation which killed 15 rebels. Two rebel fighters detained during the operation also face the same charges. They will appear in court on October 17. The ethnic Somali dominated province, commonly known as the Ogaden, is home to a low key insurgency. The ONLF leads the insurgency and has been fighting for independence since 1984. Apart from the low key rebellion, the arid region has also been the scene of a handful of kidnappings and other incidents of banditry over the past four years.

According to the Taskforce, the detainees are Andualem Arage, Zemenu Molla, Natnael Mekonnen, Asaminew Berhanu and Eskindir Nega. The Taskforce stated that the suspects were operating under the guise of formally registered political organizations to execute their hidden terrorist agenda thereby posing threat to national security. The Taskforce underlined the suspects were reported to have a strong contact with the terrorist group, Ginbot 7.

Swedish Journalists condemned in Ethiopia for investigative journalism as an "Act of Terrorism" Ethiopian troops captured the two investigative journalists Persson and Schibbye after injuring them in July this year during an exchange of gunfire with a rebel group in the Ogaden as assisting Terrorists . they were condemn for 11 years of imprisonment. Their legal representative Olsson said the 11-year sentence was the lowest possible one for the crimes they were convicted of. "The prosecutor sought 18 years imprisonment, so if you look at it that way, it is a positive thing that they got the lowest possible sentence," Olsson said. "But since they are innocent, they are very disappointed." Schibbye and Persson have until January 10 to decide if they want to appeal -- a process that could take up to two years -- or if they want to seek a pardon. The regime of Melese Zenawie is known for its arbitrary arrest and later liberating them after they recognized their act as he wants them to be by singing a pre prepared letter.
