Ethiopia has launched an electric car, despite suffering from power shortages. It is only the second African country to do so, after South Africa. Two versions of the Solaris Elettra will be manufactured in Addis Ababa, costing around $12000 and $15000. The cars will be sold in Ethiopia and exported to Africa and Europe. But some doubt if Africa, where erratic power supplies, low levels of personal wealth and poor infrastructure are common, is ready for electric cars. Carlo Pironti, general manager of Freestyle PLC, the company producing the Solaris, told the BBC's Uduak Amimo in Addis Ababa that Ethiopia's electricity shortages were not a major obstacle to operating an electric car. "Ethiopia in future will have lots of power supply," he said. "In any case, the car can be recharged by generator and by solar power." Taxes on cars in Ethiopia can be more than 100% and many Ethiopians with low incomes will struggle to afford an electric car. To overcome this problem, Mr Pironti says his company will develop a credit system for less affluent customers. Six Solaris Elettras will be produced every week for the next three months, rising to 30 per week when Freestyle's factory in Addis Ababa is fully operational, he says.

Addis Ababa Police Commission has opened an exhibition of wrecked cars and trucks to educate drivers the danger of reckless driving. Ethiopia has one of the deadliest roads in the world ranking among the top in number of accidents per capita. In the capital Addis Ababa, 180 people have died in auto accident in the past six-month alone. The exhibition is aimed to educate drivers the consequences of reckless driving.

Office for Insurance Fund has finalized preparations to introduce mandatory third party vehicle insurance for damages to other people who are injured by the insured, its Director General, Yishak Abera said Friday. Addis Ababa is home to around 397 thousand vehicles, Yishak said, adding, 64 percent of them have acquired the mandatory third party vehicle insurance. So far, some four million Birr has been collected from insurance companies that have undertaken client registration, he said. According to the Director, the Office has opened 45 branches in regional states with a view to expanding the service. Preparations have been finalized to incorporate the remaining 140 thousand vehicles into the mandatory third party insurance system.

The numerous names reflect previous uncertainty about its taxonomic position, but it is now thought to be related to the wolves of the genus Canis rather than the foxes it superficially resembles. The Ethiopian wolf is found at altitudes above 3000 metres (9800 ft) in the Afro-alpine regions of Ethiopia,[2] and is the top predator of the ecosystem. It is the most endangered canid,[3] with only about seven populations remaining, totalling roughly 550 adults. The largest population is found in the Bale Mountains in southern Ethiopia, although there are also smaller populations in the Semien Mountains in the north of the country, and in a few other areas. Claudio Sillero-Zubiri at the University of Oxford is the zoologist most closely associated with efforts to save this species of wolf, particularly with his work for an oral rabies vaccine to protect them from the disease passed from local dogs. His work is supported by the Born Free Foundation. 19841985 famine in Ethiopia The 19841985 famine in Ethiopia was a widespread famine affecting the inhabitants of today's Eritrea and Ethiopia. Four Ethiopian provinces -- Gojjam, Hararghe, Tigray, and Wollo -- all received record low rainfalls in those years. The effects of this low rainfall were exacerbated by lack of adequate government preparations, as well as the increasing drain on government revenues by various insurgencies. In the north, the insurgency of the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front and the government's counterinsurgency was the ultimate cause of the famine, though the failure of the short rains in 1984 was the proximate cause. In the south, a separate and simultaneous cause was the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) insurgency.[2] In 1984, President Mengistu Haile Mariam announced that 46% of the Ethiopian Gross National Product would be allocated to military spending, creating the largest standing army in sub-Saharan Africa; meanwhile, the allocation for health in the government budget fell from 6% in 1973/1974 to 3% in 1990/1991. Although an estimated death toll of over one million from this famine is often quoted, this figure has been challenged due to "scant empirical evidence". Nevertheless, the magnitude has been well documented, and in addition to hundreds of thousands of famine-related deaths, millions of people became destitute.
