Dirk Hebel is currently holding the position of the Scientific Director of the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Before that, he taught at the Department of Architecture, ETHZ as the Director of the Master of Advanced Studies Program in Urban Design. His research, at the Department of Architecture and the Institute of Urban Design, addresses the conceptual transfers between the human body and the contemporary city. The resulting work has been published in numerous academic journals and book publications, lately CITIES OF CHANGE: ADDIS ABABA with Marc Angélil and BATHROOM UNPLUGGED with Jörg Stollmann. Several of his Design-Research-Studios with international students from Bachelor to Master Level won international recognition. In this line, together with Marc Angélil, he published in 2008 the book DEVIATIONS, an experiment in architectural design pedagogy to initiate a plea for a new type of architectural practice. Projects include the award winning project UNITED_BOTTLE, the international traveling exhibition "INVENTIONEERING ARCHITECTURE" and the pneumatic installation "ON_AIR" in Berlin. In 2007 UNITED_BOTTLE received the Van Alen Institute Fellowship Award, the Red Dot Design Award for Best Conceptual Design and the LANXESS Award Singapore.

The guiding principle in the construction of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa was a respect for place while addressing the functional requirements of a working embassy, resulting in a contemporary structure that fully engages its local environment. The Dutch architects Dick van Gameren and Bjarne Mastenbroek will receive the Award, together with the Ethiopian architects at the firm ABBA Architects.

Eritrea Travel: St Joseph's Cathedral in Asmara, Eritrea, is a large Romanesque style cathedral in the centre of the city that was built when Eritrea was an Italian colony. The building took six years to construct and was consecrated in 1922. Its tall Gothic tower is loosely based on that of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster, London. The tower rises 57 metres into the sky and it is possible to tour the tower and see fantastic views of the art deco city. On the cathedral site, there is also a primary school, a monastery, and a convent, all of which have existed since the initial construction of the cathedral.The Asmara Cathedral is located in Asmara, Eritrea. Gojjam is home to historical, cultural, and natural wonders. There comes time where these wonders need to be studied, recognized, and promoted to visitors and the public at large. Wossen Architects, arguably one of the most futurist architects of Ethiopia, designed the architecture of the building complex which will be constructed at the heart of Debre Markos. The overall cost of the project is currently estimated at ETB 150000000 (150 million Ethiopian Birr), which is to be collected from you, the public and donors.

Debre Damo is the name of a flat-topped mountain, or amba, and a 6th century monastery in northern Ethiopia. The mountain is steeply rising plateau of trapezoidal shape, about 1000 by 400 meters in dimension, having an elevation of 2216 meters above sea level, and located west of Adigrat in the Mehakelegnaw Zone of the Tigray Region. The monastery, accessible only by rope up a sheer cliff, is known for its collection of manuscripts, and having the earliest existing church building in Ethiopia still in its original style. Tradition claims the monastery was founded in the sixth century by Abuna Aregawi. The monastery received its first archeological examination by E. Littman who led a German expedition to northern Ethiopia in the early 20th century. By the time David Buxton saw the ancient church in the mid-1940s, he found it "on the point of collapse";[1] a few years later, the English architect DH Matthews assisted in the restoration of the building, which included the rebuilding of one of its wood and stone walls (a characteristic style of Aksumite architecture).[2] Thomas Pakenham, who visited the church in 1955, records a tradition that Debre Damo had also once been a royal prison for heirs to the Emperor of Ethiopia, like the better known Wehni and Amba Geshen. The exterior walls of the church were built of alternating courses of limestone blocks and wood, "fitted with the projecting stumps that Ethiopians call 'monkey heads.'" Take a tour of Rock-Hewn Lalibela in Ethiopia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. In Ethiopia- beneath its surface- are some of the most fascinating churches in the world. These amazing tower-like constructs are cut out of the rock surrounding them. The churches were likely commissioned by King Lalibela and built between 12th and 14th centuries. According to one legend, angels helped in the work to speed up the construction. The interior of the churches are filled with intricate carvings and beautiful tapestries of biblical scenes. Though the dating of the churches is not well established, most are thought to have been built during the reign of Lalibela, namely during the 12th and 13th centuries. There are 13 churches, assembled in four groups: The Northern Group: Bete Medhane Alem, home to the Lalibela Cross and believed to be the largest monolithic church in the world, probably a copy of St Mary of Zion in Aksum. It is linked to Bete Maryam (possibly the oldest of the churches), Bete Golgotha (known for its arts and said to contain the tomb of King Lalibela), the Selassie Chapel and the Tomb of Adam. The Western Group: Bete Giyorgis, said to be the most finely executed and best preserved church. The Eastern Group: Bete Amanuel (possibly the former royal chapel), Bete Merkorios (which may be a former prison), Bete Abba Libanos and Bete Gabriel-Rufael (possibly a former royal palace), linked to a holy bakery. www.TravelsWithSheila.com We started touring with the Northwestern group of churches containing 6 of Lalibela's 11 churches. Cut out of rock from the top down and connected by passages and slippery steps worn down over hundreds of years, it wasn't easy navigating without doing major injury to yourself. All UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the pink and orangey shades of rock reminded us of Petra. If you haven't visited Petra (a "must" for travelers), watch Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade and you'll see what I mean. It was impossible to see Lalibela without the feeling that we'd just stepped into the bible.
