The First Annual Ethiopian Festival in Downtown Silver Spring. Saturday, June 25, 2011. It was great. There were vendor tents of people sending or promoting Ethiopian cultural items and products. Dancing, modeling, comedy, music, raffle drawing and food, many Habesha people were there, including friends of Ethiopia, spectators, supporters, and the curious. It was a success and I look forward to attending, and probably having my own tent, next year 2011.

www.ethiopian.tv - Ashenda is a Tigraian traditional festival which takes place in August to mark the ending of fasting called filseta. This event is mostly for girls and young women, which they await very eagerly every year. It is unique to the people in the state of Tigrai which is in northern Ethiopia. The name of the festival "Ashenda" comes from the name of a tall grass that the girls make into a skirt and wear it around their waist as a decoration.

This celebration is in Axum, ancient capital of Ethiopia, in front of the 2000 year old stellae, adjacent to the chapel housing the Ark of the Covenant. Meskel is also the name of a daisy, that grows prolifically at this time of year, after the rains.

With a reverence for the vintage sounds of 1970s Ethiopian pop and a fresh approach all their own, Debo Band offers an exciting live show full of the searing horns, crooning vocals, and slinky funk grooves that brought renown to the Ethiopiques series. Founded by Ethiopian-America musician Danny Mekonnen, the group is committed to introducing Ethiopian music to new audiences far and wide. Since forming in 2006, this Boston-based collective of eleven members has made two pilgrimages to East Africa -- with accordions, tubas, saxophones, guitars, and drums in tow. Along the way, Debo Band has struck up collaborations with traditional Ethiopian artists, played major African music festivals, and is currently working with a filmmaker on a documentary about their escapades. Debo Band recently produced its first two releases: Adderech Arada, a 7" single on the Brooklyn-based label Electric Cowbell Records, and Flamingoh (Pink Bird Dawn), a self-released EP/CD recorded live in Africa and the US, documenting their unique take on 1970s Ethiopian funk. In September 2010, Debo Band presented the debut US tour of their project with Fendika, a dance and folk music ensemble from Addis Ababa, at the Chicago World Music Festival and Joe's Pub (NYC).
