| | Arvo Part - Da Pacem Domine (Lamentate) Duration : 338 Seconds Arvo Part is an Estonian composer born in 1935. He's considered a classical post-modern composer, and he explores the minimalism and the hypnotic senses that the voice con make. He's the creator of Tintinnabuli - simple style that was influenced by the composer's mystical experiences with chant music. Musically, Pärt's tintinnabular music is characterized by two types of voices, the first of which (dubbed the "tintinnabular voice") arpeggiates the tonic triad, and the second of which moves diatonically in stepwise motion. The paintings are from the french surrealist painter Yves Tanguy (1900-1955). Yves Tanguy's paintings have a unique, immediately recognizable style of nonrepresentational surrealism. They show vast, abstract landscapes, mostly in a tightly limited palette of colors, only occasionally showing flashes of contrasting color accents. Typically, these alien landscapes are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp as shards of glass, sometimes with an intriguingly organic look to them, like giant amoebae suddenly turned to stone. | | Artur Kapp: Symphony No. 4, 'Noostesumioonin' Duration : 1410 Seconds Composer: Artur Kapp (28 February 1878 -- 14 January 1952) was an Estonian composer. Born in Suure-Jaani, Estonia, then part of the Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire, he was the son of Joosep Kapp, who was also a classically trained musician. Kapp began his musical career studying organ at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory as a student of both Louis Homilius and composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1891. Kapp graduated from the Conservatory in 1900 as a composer and from 1904 until 1920 worked as a music director in the southern Russian city of Astrakhan, then returning to Estonia as a professor and conductor at the Tallinn Conservatory where he counted among his students such future notable Estonian composers as Evald Aav, Edgar Arro, Gustav Ernesaks, Helen Tobias-Duesberg, Riho Päts and Enn Võrk. He is, along with Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918), generally considered to be one of the founders of Estonian symphonic music. Kapp's son Eugen (1908--1996) and nephew Villem (1913--1964) became notable composers as well, having studied at the Tallinn Conservatory under direction of the elder Kapp. (ref: Wikipedia) Composition: Symphony No. 4, 'Noostesumioonin' Orchestra: The Estonian State Symphony Orchestra Neeve Jarvi, conductor Cover Art: Four paintings by Anton Aunma, an Estonian artist. | | Extraordinary people - Daniel Tammet - Pt1 of 3 Duration : 576 Seconds Daniel Tammet has the capability to visualize each number up to 10000 with its own unique shape and feel. He can "see" results of calculations as landscapes, and he can "sense" whether a number is prime or composite. He has described his visual image of 289 as particularly ugly, 333 as particularly attractive, and pi as beautiful. Tammet not only verbally describes these visions, but also creates artwork, particularly watercolor paintings, such as his painting of Pi. Tammet speaks a variety of languages including English, French, Finnish, German, Spanish, Lithuanian, Romanian, Estonian, Icelandic, Welsh and Esperanto. He particularly likes Estonian, because it is rich in vowels. Tammet is creating a new language called Mänti. Mänti has many features related to Finnish and Estonian, both of which are Finno-ugric languages. Some sources credit Tammet as creating the Uusisuom and Lapsi languages as well. Tammet is capable of learning new languages very quickly. To prove this for the Channel Five documentary, Tammet was challenged to learn Icelandic in one week. Seven days later he appeared on Icelandic television conversing in Icelandic, with his Icelandic language instructor saying it was "not human." | | TV3 news: Natalie Richy - artist, Web Art Academy co-founder Duration : 192 Seconds webartacademy.com - Learn how to Paint with Natalie Richy. natalierichy.com - Natalie Richy's website. Here, in the centre of London, lives a young and talented Latvian fine artist named Natalie Richy. In just a few years she has achieved something remarkable -- recognition in England's art world. Natalie's paintings are being exhibited in fine art galleries and she has very ambitious plans for the future. We met Natalie in her art studio next to the City of London. The artist admits that in almost every artwork she is painting herself. "At exhibitions I've often been asked where I developed my painting skills and style. I'm proud to tell people that I graduated from the Latvian Academy of Art. Now, more and more people in Britain can appreciate what Latvian art is." After graduation from the Academy, Natalie went to London, where she was introduced to TV mogul Simon Fuller. "He liked my artistic style and he purchased some of my art. That was the financial support that let me stay in London." Natalie was giving private painting lessons back in Latvia, but while abroad she decided to expand her tutoring activities. She spent a few years doing research in art libraries and studying the old masters' techniques. Then she founded her own programme of online video lessons to teach others those techniques. Now she has students from all over the world -- mostly from the USA, Europe, Australia and Russia. The artist is pleased that she could make a living by doing the things she ...
