The Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations
Duration : 241 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Both a repository and a showcase for the regions tradition of performing folk art, this cultural expression culminates in large-scale festivals every fifth year in Estonia and Latvia and every fourth year in Lithuania. These grand events, held over several days, assemble as many as 40000 singers and dancers. For the most part, the participants belong to amateur choirs and dance groups.Their repertories reflect the wide range of musical traditions in the Baltic States, from the most ancient folk songs to contemporary compositions. Directed by professional choir conductors, bandleaders and dance instructors, many singers and dancers practise throughout the year in community centres and local cultural institutions. Choirs and musical ensembles first became institutionalized in Estonia during the eighteenth century. Subsequently, choir singing spread throughout rural and urban areas, spurred by the growing popularity of choral music, singing societies and song festivals in Western Europe. With the participation of the most active choirs from various regions of these States, the Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations were initially organized in Estonia in 1869 and in Latvia in 1873. Lithuania hosted its first celebration in 1924. Once the Baltic States gained independence from Russia after the First World War, the celebrations acquired widespread popularity as a means ...

Koit / Dawn (Night Song Festival '08)
Duration : 341 Seconds

"Koit" (Dawn) 19 August 2008, Tallinn, Estonia. Performed by Tõnis Mägi with more than 6000 choir singers and a symphony orchestra, in front of an audience of more than 100000 people. About the event: To celebrate the 20 years that have passed since the first night song festivals in Estonia, a song night "Märkamisaeg" (Time to Notice) took place. "Märkamisaeg" was one of the main events of the programme of the 90th Anniversary of Estonian Republic. The 6 hours long concert began at 9pm and lasted until early morning. About the performer: Tõnis Mägi is an Estonian singer and songwriter who has been probably the most influential and remarkable name in the Estonian rock music for the past 40 years. In the years of the Estonian "Singing Revolution" he was one of the most prominent singers with his song "Koit" (Dawn) achieving anthem status. Lyrics (and my quick translation): On jälle aeg selg sirgu lüüa (Again it's time to stand up straight) ja heita endalt orjarüü, (And cast off our shackles) et loomishoos kõik loodu (That everything once created) koos võiks sündida uuesti. (Could together be born again) On koit, kuninglik loit, (It's dawn, a majestic blaze) valguse võit äratab maa. (Victory of the light awakes the land) Prii on taevapiir, esimene kiir (Free is the horizon, and the first ray) langemas on maale. (Will soon touch the land) Hõik - murrame kõik, (A call to break down it all) et vabana saaks hingata taas. (That we could freely breathe again) Näe - on murdunud jää ...

Toomas Hendrik Ilves 20.08.2008 at Night Song Festival (Öölaulupidu)
Duration : 513 Seconds

Estonia's President Toomas Hendrik Ilves' speech on 20. August 2008 at Night Song Festival. My translation: "Dear people here and in all Estonian homes. Look around! We are all here! All! 20 years ago Estonian nation upraised against fear and humiliation. Nation's desire for freedom became a song for hundreds of thousands of people. Our spirit became free. Back that had been crouching for half a century, now stood straight. Our songs and longing became activity towards freedom. We won and made Estonia a state again! Estonia knows how to win and our people know how to win. Let us be proud of that, like today we are proud of the world's best Gerd Kanter's Olympic Gold! That's simply awesome. Just like you. This night's song festival is called 'Time Of Noticing' and we all are asked when was the last time we noticed that Estonia is free. This question would have hit the nailhead two weeks ago. Because a lot of us had started to take many things - our state, our freedom, our rights - for granted. But now, after 10 days of appalling news from Georgia we understand that freedom can not be taken for granted. Freedom is not a simple word or declaration you can laugh at. Freedom needs to be cherished and protected every day. Freedom expects us to notice what is happening in the world. It expects us to see us as a part of this complicated and changing world. Which means we have to take care of what is important and not let us be distracted by the unimportant. To keep the freedom ...

To Make a Storm - 10 minute short (Üheshingamine - Laulu- ja tantsupidu)
Duration : 423 Seconds

90min film data - www.facebook.com The joy of recognizing our home, our roots, our historical identity through the participation of the united people present at the Song- and Dance festival is like a storm in our hearts. It swells with the pleasure of singing and dancing in to resonant motion of the soul. It expresses our nation's character, the Estonian spirit. Our pledge of our sovereignty is painted of singing and dancing together in our national traditionally patterned dress. That is an image of the soul of men and women, showing how people can be a good and calm force in the world. This is a picture of the Estonian soul, a special force or a phenomenon which is cut out to us from the scars of the nation, and without them this image can not be forged by any other nation. The presence of each person has strong energetic influence; each word we say has even stronger effect, not to mention singing. Singing is the expression of our state of mind. And when people come together in large crowds - half of Estonia's people - breathing and singing and dancing together being rooted in a long tradition of several centuries, it has a very strong energetic effect that can change the world around us. The song as a joint expression of the soul, a sense of community, a song is where people are freed and the characteristics of the Estonian people actually understood. Our consciousness and identity emerge from independent thinking, ingrained with subconscious cultural roots, and ...
