It is dedicated to the late Terrence Des Pres, whose book The Survivor, a much-admired account of holocaust survivors' will to bear witness, entailed a great struggle for the author. Forche, who knew Des Pres later, witnessed forms of that struggle. Des Pres taught at Colgate University and he was one of the first to offer a course in the literature of the holocaust (in the mid-1970s). | | Carolyn Forché talks about the poetry of witness Duration : 1682 Seconds Carolyn Forché is best known for The Country Between Us (1981), the stunning poems from her work in El Salvador for Amnesty International. In this talk with Roland Flint, Forché describes Against Forgetting, the 800-page anthology she published in 1993. The volume brings together 145 poets whose work attests to the harrowing conditions -- exile, repression, deprivation, prison -- they endured. Forché reads poems by Anna Akhmatova, Bertolt, Günter Eich, Antonio Machado, and Greog Trakl, ending with Nelly Sash's haunting whiff of the death camps "O The Chimneys." Against Forgetting is, indeed, what Forché subtitle calls it: "the poetry of witness."
