Filmed August 31, 2006. Once a year, for their patron saint festival, the town of Nejapa in El Salvador celebrates by painting their faces and throwing balls of fire at each other on the main street of town. Occasionally these balls of fire land in the crowds that gather to watch. All of this is incredibly fun to be a part of. A live band plays the whole time, and fireworks go off in the midst of the firefight.

CURATOR'S STATEMENT Henry Membreño's newest exhibition at Talento Bilingüe is historical. Much like the myriad of stories of his family passed on to Henry, almost all of the paintings in this collection are the result of layers of accidents and transgressions. They are what have survived as he wrestles with the literal, and the abstract. These collected narratives speak though his paintings as they explore an individual's experience, or passage, through life. As Henry pushes the paint it, pushes back and we are witnesses to the narrative of this struggle. What is revealed are maps which tell the stories of not only his family's exodus from El Salvador but his own story of the experience and his personal process of art making. Similar to the Membreño family, these works are survivors. They are the physical manifestation of memories and from his perceptions based on those historical transmissions. Each work included in this exhibition, Pasaje : Passage is an evolution of struggles with these fleeting memories and evidence of the conviction it takes to allow the images to emerge. Some works capture specific historical moments from the artist's family such as in "La Inducción", where his father, many years her senior, pierces Ms. Membreño's ears to give her the appearance of being closer to his age. In the tightly rendered work the blood on the white plate symbolizes a step into adulthood and the end of her youth. In other works such as "Pasaje" & "Memories of a Canary ...

Shelly Lipscomb Echeverria's series of artwork is titled "So, they say I Have Breast Cancer." A graduate of Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, Echeverria holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is an employee of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and resides in Harrisburg with her Husband and children. Shelly reflecting on her work: I paint because I must. Making art brings me peace. I can lose myself for hours while I am painting. It's what my soul was created to do. A variety of her other paintings are also on display including a series she completed after a trip to her husband's native El Salvador in 2009.

Inside the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador. It's a beautiful cathedral. The "capilla" was ornate with a beatiful fresco and amazing paintings. From Wikipedia: The principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador and the seat of the Archbishop of San Salvador. The church was twice visited by Pope John Paul II who said that the cathedral was "intimately allied with the joys and hopes of the Salvadoran people."[1] During his visits in 1983 and 1996, the Pope knelt and prayed before the Tomb of Archbishop Óscar Romero, assassinated in 1980, whose tomb here is a major pilgrim draw.
