SHARE El Salvador: Sustainable Agriculture in San Simon
Duration : 277 Seconds

El Salvador is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world facing climate change, and food security is a serious issue for thousands of subsistence rural farmers and their families. Organic methods, native seeds, community organization and disaster preparedness are all part of the solution for communities like San Simon, Usulutan, El Salvador. In this video, community leaders share their efforts to recuperate native seeds, organize their community, learn about organic farming, and prepare for the next disaster. Unfortunately, in October 2011 this disaster struck: torrential rains associated with Tropical Depression 12E wrought havoc on El Salvador, causing flooding, mudslides, and forcing the evacuation of over 50000. Over 150 million pounds of basic grains -- the beans and tortillas of every day -- were lost. Organized communities like San Simon are the best prepared to face these disasters, access government and non-government aid, and rebuild for the future. For more information on SHARE's work in El Salvador and how you can get involved today, please visit www.share-elsalvador.org!

Permaculture in El Salvador
Duration : 580 Seconds

El Salvador is a traditionally agricultural country that is moving forward with neoliberal development and industrialization. It is also a country in severe environmental and social crisis due to centuries of exploitation and abuse. The Permaculture Institute of El Salvador is sustainable community development organization that is working to improve the environment and the quality of life for the marginalized rural poor. They combine permaculture practices and philosophy with the local culture and climate to create an effective and empowering movement. Utilizing the Mesoamerican Farmer to Farmer Movement, people not only become ecological farmers, but also permaculture promoters and community leaders. In the age of growing concern of global warming, peak oil, and failing conventional agriculture, there are growing grassroots movements in search of an alternative to industrialization and neoliberalism. The work of the Permaculture Institute of El Salvador provides evidence that an alternative is possible, even in a severely degraded land. By focusing on strengths instead of weaknesses, and turning obstacles into opportunities, they bring hope to communities struggling to retain their traditional lifestyle. They are both an inspiration and a guide, demonstrating what is possible in El Salvador and the rest of the world.

Joya de Cerén, El Salvador May 2009 1of2
Duration : 581 Seconds

Joya de Cerén (Jewel of Cerén in the Spanish language) is an archaeological site in El Salvador featuring a pre-Columbian Maya farming village preserved remarkably intact under layers of volcanic ash. It is often referred to as the "Pompeii of the Americas" in comparison to the famous Ancient Roman ruins. A small farming community inhabited as early as 900 BC, Cerén was on the southeast edge of the Maya cultural area. Cerén was evacuated in AD 250 due to the eruption of the Ilopango volcano but was repopulated no earlier than the year 400 and was, at the time of its final evacuation, a tributary to nearby San Andrés. Around the year 590,[1][2] Loma Caldera, another nearby volcano, erupted and buried the village under 14 layers of ash. The villagers were apparently able to flee in time – no bodies have been found – although they left behind utensils, ceramics, furniture, and even half-eaten food in their haste to escape. The site was discovered in 1976 by Payson Sheets, a professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since then the excavation process has continued. About 70 buildings have been uncovered. Even more important than the buildings, however, are the paleoethnobotanical remains. The low temperature of the wet ash from Loma Caldera, as well as its rapid fall, ensured the preservation of much of the plant material. Of great importance is the discovery of manioc fields, the first time manioc cultivation had been found at a New World ...

From the Source - Olympia Coffee Sourcing Coffee in Central America
Duration : 481 Seconds

Last month I had the privilege of following my client, Olympia Coffee Roasters through Central America to shoot a video about working with coffee farmers. We shot in Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala. The song that carries the film was recorded live on location in El Salvador. After being woken up at 5am by a marching band through town, we frantically gathered our gear and chased down the parade to witness possibly the most beautiful community wide funeral for an elder that had died the night before. An event that will stick with me for the rest of my life. vimeo.com I hope you enjoy the show!
