| | Family Heritage and Birthplace - El Salvador Duration : 279 Seconds In order to understand the family heritage, you must take into account the birth place and culture of where you were born and grew up. My grandfathers immigrated from Canton, China to El Salvador around 1890. It took 2 months to sail across the Pacific ocean. Thousands of miles away from their own families to start a new life. My father and I were born in El Salvador, my children were born in San Francisco, Ca. I grew up with the culture from El Salvador, a small and intimate country. The beach, the sand, the water, coconut trees, the volcanoes, the indian natives, all very colorful and I still remember most of it. However my grandfathers adapted to their new country and did not pass on any of the old country traditions. Many things will not be forgotten, the food, pupusas, the coffee plantations, the splash of surf in the night at the beach, the market place, all very good reminders of where I grew up. I share some pictures from El Salvador with you so you can understand where I come from. El Salvador. The littlest country with the biggest heart and hard working people. | | National Hispanic Heritage Month - ASL Duration : 187 Seconds Hola! My name is Carlos and I am proudly Guatemalan. That's where my family originally came from. What a beautiful country! "Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period." Again, my name is Carlos and I am president of Texas Latino Council of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. | | Joya de Cerén, El Salvador May 2009 1of2 Duration : 581 Seconds Joya de Cerén (Jewel of Cerén in the Spanish language) is an archaeological site in El Salvador featuring a pre-Columbian Maya farming village preserved remarkably intact under layers of volcanic ash. It is often referred to as the "Pompeii of the Americas" in comparison to the famous Ancient Roman ruins. A small farming community inhabited as early as 900 BC, Cerén was on the southeast edge of the Maya cultural area. Cerén was evacuated in AD 250 due to the eruption of the Ilopango volcano but was repopulated no earlier than the year 400 and was, at the time of its final evacuation, a tributary to nearby San Andrés. Around the year 590,[1][2] Loma Caldera, another nearby volcano, erupted and buried the village under 14 layers of ash. The villagers were apparently able to flee in time – no bodies have been found – although they left behind utensils, ceramics, furniture, and even half-eaten food in their haste to escape. The site was discovered in 1976 by Payson Sheets, a professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Since then the excavation process has continued. About 70 buildings have been uncovered. Even more important than the buildings, however, are the paleoethnobotanical remains. The low temperature of the wet ash from Loma Caldera, as well as its rapid fall, ensured the preservation of much of the plant material. Of great importance is the discovery of manioc fields, the first time manioc cultivation had been found at a New World ... Tags :Joya, de, Ceren, El, Salvador, archaeological, site, world, heritage.

| | Hispanic Heritage Month Duration : 149 Seconds My name is Federico Arango and I created this video to commemorate Hispanic Heritage month which takes place along 30 days, September through October. The video played on our high school closed circuit television program. This video was meant to be played on the national television program Telemundo but for some reason our television club teacher did not submit it or forgot. It was a shame but at least the students got to see it. The Credits for the video were created specifically for You Tube and the whole narration is in Spanish so as to celebrate Hispanic culture but I included subtitles so as to not alienate or segregate students in the high school who did not speak Spanish. I wanted everyone to understand the video. i completely understand that this video does not cover every aspect of hispanic heritage or culture or afro latin culture or every aspect of traditional Native American roots, because the video was required to be only a certain length for school. i wish i could have included everything but it was impossible. I would like to thank my Father for helping me drive around the city to film, my mother for helping me create a rough draft of the narrative script, Margaret for taking the time to narrate the whole thing and all the businesses and people who let us film them. We who are Hispanic should be very proud of our culture and celebrate it every day in our own unique way while also celebrating that we are Americans and can prosper in the United States if we ...
