The case reveals the extent to which the internet is shaping political protests in Egypt. "I think the blogs are having a direct impact on Egyptian society", states political scientist Rabab El Mahdy. "They're attracting younger people that we haven't been able to reach through traditional routes". Under Egypt's emergency laws, demonstrations are illegal. But in hundreds of internet articles, protestors are revealing their government's brutal tactics and demanding change. | | ACE - Animal Care in Egypt Duration : 569 Seconds ACE - Animal Care in Egypt Registered Charity UK 1082679 Egypt Society #2 Luxor www.ace-egypt.org.uk ACE was opened in July 2000 by two animal lovers (Julie Wartenberg and Kim Taylor) who had initially come to Egypt on holiday. They were so distressed by the condition of the horses and donkeys they saw around Luxor, they decided to do something to help. ACE started as a simple idea to give these animals a break from their long working day in the hot sun, somewhere they could have their tack removed, a wash and a drink. The dirt and sweat under the tack was rubbing, causing sores and eventually open wounds. Now many of these sores are being prevented by teaching the owners to regularly wash their animals. ACE has now evolved into a fully functioning veterinary hospital with up to 200 animals visiting a day (most requiring some sort of medical attention), ranging from camels, horses and donkeys to cats, dogs and even tortoises. ACE knows that most visitors rarely see the thousands of working animals serving the needs of the tourist industry. They are still used as the main transport for most things, from the bricks, steel and cement used in the building to the huge amount of food and drink consumed in Luxor every day. These animals are almost overloaded and overworked. ACE is trying to improve the lives of these animals not only by treatment but also by education and prevention. The service we provide is free to the poor owners who rely so heavily on their animals to feed ... | | Ancient Egyptian Music - Hymn for the Sunrise Duration : 328 Seconds This musical tribute to ancient Egypt was originally composed in 1978 by Alo Jihad Racy for the King Tutankhamun exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. It was inspired by the artistry of the ancient treasures and the religious symbolism of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which suggested titles of the compositions. Only traditional Near Eastern instruments were used in making this recording, like the nay, salamiyyah, buzuq, mijwiz, mizmar and others. Although music existed in prehistoric Egypt, the evidence for it becomes secure only in the historical (or "dynastic" or "pharaonic") period--after 3100 BCE. Music formed an important part of Egyptian life, and musicians occupied a variety of positions in Egyptian society. Music found its way into many contexts in Egypt: temples, palaces, workshops, farms, battlefields and the tomb. Music was an integral part of religious worship in ancient Egypt, so it is not surprising that there were gods specifically associated with music, such as Hathor and Bes (both were also associated with dance, fertility and childbirth). All the major categories of musical instruments (percussion, wind, stringed) were represented in pharaonic Egypt. Percussion instruments included hand-held drums, rattles, castanets, bells, and the sistrum--a highly important rattle used in religious worship. Hand clapping too was used as a rhythmic accompaniment. Wind instruments included flutes (double and single, with reeds and without) and trumpets. Stringed ... | | Ancient Egyptian Music - Ya Rab Toba (From Sa'ed Oena) Duration : 783 Seconds This track represents the folk music of Sa'ed, known for the great variety of instruments used in this joyful call-and-response style music generally heard at celebratory gatherings; the final track exemplifies the more western compositional style of modern popular forms.During the Grateful Dead's historic 1978 performances in Egypt, percussionist Mickey Hart set time aside to travel with longtime friend Hamza El Din and make field recordings of the country's richly varied folkloric music. The music of Egypt can be classified into four basic regional styles -- the southernmost style of the Aswan area, divided into Arabic-speaking Nubians and a Nubian-speaking sector divided into Mahasi and Mattokki; the style of Luxor, commonly known as Sa'ed; the style of El-Meniya to the Mediterranean Sea, called the Fellahim; and the urban music of such cities as Cairo and Alexandria.
