The Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador are home to some of the most exotic and beautiful species of animals in the world. These islands are just one of many natural wonders that make Ecuador such a beautiful country. At the equator in western South America, Ecuador includes sections of the Amazon rainforest while the Andes Mountains, speckled with ruins of the Inca Empire, tower over the Pacific to the west. Despite its beautiful landscape, Ecuador has long been marred by political turmoil and poverty. The country's history has been filled with corruption and rebellion. With political stability always in question, the economy has never been able to support Ecuador's nearly fifteen million people. While higher global oil prices have helped to reestablish the economy, 35 percent of Ecuadorians still live in poverty. The Catholic Church in Ecuador has found its position being challenged in recent years by the increasing number of Evangelical churches. It has even resulted in violent actions against churches. Yet the impact of the gospel continues to spread. In 1967, only 120 of the 3 million Quichua were Christians. Today in some areas, almost 50 percent of the Quichua people have come to know Christ as their personal savior.

Caracas, Venezuela (NTN24) At the regional ALBA (Boliviarian Alternative for the Americas) summit, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa proposed on Saturday (February 4) that the group sanction Great Britain over its dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. The suggestion was one of several anti-Washington propositions discussed by Latin American leftist leaders. ALBA, which consists of eight Latin American countries, was created as an alternative to US free trade organizations and has become a megaphone for leftist positions in the Western Hemisphere. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who hosted the event, applauded Saturday's decision by Russia and China to veto a UN draft calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to quit after his bloody crackdown in which the UN says 5000 people have died. William Farr went to Ecuador in the summer of 1972 to work with a Christian mission camp, and did not return to the States until 1993. He and his wife Mercy, whom he met in her native Ecuador, have devoted their lives to the spread of the gospel in this poverty-stricken and destitute part of the world. While in the States in the early 1990's, William studied under Pastor Joe Morecraft and became an ordained minister of the gospel under the Reformed Presbyterian Church in the US. For the last 18 years Chevron and a number of Ecuadorian tribes have been battling in court over one of the biggest environmental scandals in the world. Following an Ecuadorian court ruling which ordered Chevron to pay $9.5 billion in damages to the plaintiffs, the oil company pushed the case back to New York, winning a judgment which prevented the enforcement of the Ecuadorian ruling. Meanwhile the Amazon Defense Coalition said thousands of people are being affected by cancer and other illnesses from pollution and contamination. "It's considered to be one of the largest environmental disasters in the world on record," said Karen Hinton, spokesperson for the Amazon Defense Coalition. Local tribes in Amazon's forests have been battling for compensation for damage caused by Texaco -- a company owned by Chevron. Billions of gallons of toxic waste dumped onto Ecuador's soil and waters ways causing casualties and serious environmental damage. "Over 1400 people have died of cancer, and thousands more have died of other illnesses," said Hinton. An Ecuadorian court ruled Chevron must pay 9.5 billion in damages, a sum the company could easily afford. "Though it's certainly a large amount of money for you and me, this is something that could certainly be absorbed by Chevron, just as BP has been able to absorb the 20 billion or more cost of practically destroying the gulf of Mexico," said Brad Johnson, the climate editor at Thinkprogress.com.
