CARLA BADILLO CORONADO was born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1985. She is a poet, storyteller, filmmaker, and a founding member of a traditional dance group called Tullpucuna (in Quichua it means Colors), which performs with and for indigenous communities. She has made a documentary film on the life of Jaime Guevara, an Ecuadorian anarchist song-writer. Her poems are found in two collections which are being translated into English. She is currently working on an account of her travels in Latin America, the US and Europe, and she writes articles on the arts and culture. This poets work was introduced to San Francisco in 2008, when she read at the North Beach Poetry Festival. sfipf.org

Trying to bring the spirit of Julio Jaramillo's renditions of Silva's poetry, I have tried to set Medardo Angel Silva's poetry to music, but not la musica como los pasillos, sino the country/folk music of the United States. Nor will I ever be called the nightingale of the Americas. So it's different, but hopefully in the spirit of Medardo Angel Silva.

Another translation. One of Silva's more beautiful poems evoking a Guayaquil that may have never been at his favorite time of day-late at night. Still he condenses a lot of memorable imaginary in such a short poem. I will be getting others to read also. All that I'm uploading was on one day off from work, when I finally had the apartment to myself and so went on a recording binge. For each poem, I improvised music and recorded that too.

Take a trip with me to El Chota, Ecuador where I did my independent study project about Afroecuadorian identity, expression, and political empowerment. I taught English and poetry workshops to 32 middle school students and 60 highschoolers for a month. Together, we created Nuestras Voces, a book of our poetry.
