In the south of Ecuador, within a high valley surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Andes, is the country's third largest city, Cuenca, an historic World Heritage Site in which the Tomebamba River divides the more elevated old town from the modern districts of the city. The Spanish once passed through Cuenca while travelling along the ancient Inca route from Cuzco to Quito. This old town is still one of the most beautiful in South America. It possesses the atmosphere and architecture of late Colonial times and is located two thousand five hundred metres above sea level. The Catedral Nueva is the finest religious building in the whole of South America and contains elements of Romantic, Gothic and Baroque architecture that dominate this huge building, both without and within. The mighty blue-white domes of the new cathedral dominate Cuenca's skyline, dominating all!

So many beautiful homes in Otavalo have been razed rather than restored. This colonial gem will be saved. The old Moorish architecture allowed plenty of space and light and elegance. Humberto Lema is the Otavalo architect in charge of the restoration. He explains the need to restore and preserve this 100 year old building.

Quito, otherwise known as the 'divine city', is the capital of Ecuador. It is a Spanish colonial city and Baroque gem surrounded by volcanic mountains, its historic centre having been built on the ruins of an Inca city. La Basilica is situated on a northern hill and is one of the city's most monumental buildings measuring a hundred and forty metres long and thirty five metres wide. It is one of Quito's earliest religious buildings and its construction began in 1892 when, a century later, it was consecrated by the Pope. The basilica is an architectural symbol of an autocratic Catholic church which dominated the country until the Liberal Revolution of 1925. The former Inca city subsequently became a splendid, yet strict, religious settlement of the main religious orders. On the northern side of the plaza is the Palacio Arzobispal, the Archbishop's Palace. Its size and location highlight the prominent position of the Catholic church that continues to be of great importance today. The Catedral Metropolitana is situated on the opposite side of the square and is the result of various building epochs. The ancient town of Quito with all its alleys, buildings and courtyards is a gem of colonial architecture and monuments such as the Arco De La Reina, a kind of triumphal gate, still adorns the metropolis. The architecture that we used is modular, giving us the possibility to insert SkillBox in to mobile devices such as Windows Phone, tablets, slates and also in the near future, we want to integrate it into television, cinemas, and more. SkillBox runs in a small PC like Classmate PC and the user only needs a headset and the PC running Windows 7 with speech recognition. With this small requirements SkillBox is accessible for almost any user that has the option to buy a low cost computer, and in the researches that we made, we found that in our region most hearing impaired people have limited economic resources, or live in rural areas, so SkillBox helps them to have better access to education.
