A few shots from our recent trip to Otovalo, Ecuador. A small town a few hours north of Quito. Every Saturday, there is a huge fruit and materials market in town surrounding the plaza; and this rather fascinating animal market on the outskirts of the town. Animals are being sold for pets and food (but mainly food to be cooked or bred).

Entry from: Baños, Ecuador Entry Title: "Birds, Animals, Reptiles" Entry: "It was a Sunday and it looked like it was going to be a good day so we decided to go to Banos' pretty little zoo. More than anything, we wanted to see the Andean Condor and the endangered Spectacled or Andean Bear. Paddington the Bear was one of these - "from deepest, darkest Peru". The setting is amazing, beside the Pastaza River Gorge and surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Many of the walkways and stairs are made of volcanic black rocks - basalt. One of the maps that we have of this area labels the zoo as the 'animal prison' but that didn't stop us from checking it out. The $1.25 taxi ride took us to its doorstep and for the next 3 hours, we enjoyed seeing animals that we had only ever read about. Admission was $1.50. Actually there were two places to visit - one that houses many species of animals and birds found in the Amazon Cloud Forest of Ecuador's central highlands and the other one features native fish and reptiles. The mission of the Zoo is to educate, conserve and rehabilitate and it has lots of educational programs for kids in the area. Jennifer, at the age of eight, wrote a Spanish Language "Old MacDonald" that teaches Ecuadoran Spanish pronunciations of the sounds various indigenous animals make in that region. Taken from her love of the chaotic time in a local festival where all of the animals are herded into a coral, she brings alive her native culture, teaches children how to make animal sounds, and entertains. It is performed by Chuck E. Costa.

unconventionaltravel.com Well often times you come across starving animals on your travels in the world. I was on my way to do a local hike in Vilcabamba, Ecuador and came across this emancipated dog. The dog was chained up without food or water. I would imagine they just chained him up for a security dog. I can become pretty unruly when I come across an animal tied up with no means to fend for itself. So I opened the gate and walked in to the deserted house to investigate. The rope collar was embedded in his skin. He was wagging his tail at me and I was rather cautious in approaching him. "What the hell," I said to myself. I will at least give him a chance to run away. So I proceeded to shimmy the rope from his neck and I was just hoping the pain would not cause him to bite me. He reeked of stench and he seemed to relax while I worked the tight rope over his head and ears. Finally he was free. Quickly I walked out of the compound and closed the gate up. He rather timidly followed me into the road. Really there is probably no happy ending here. He walked over to the neighbor's house and sat down in the road. I hope there is a since of shame in the neighbors of what the dogs appearance says (look at me. Help me.) I hope he is not chained again. Maybe a fast moving bus came by and relieved him of his misery. Animal treatment is different here. There is no one to call and report this. It's a cruel world.
