Weaving life - The Story of Ecuador's "Panama Hat" (1/3)
Duration : 595 Seconds

Weaving Life - Discovering the Story of Ecuador's "Panama Hat" This is a 30min documentary about the perhaps most famous and powerful hat in history. We are following the story and the people who are making the word's most famous straw hat - the Panama hat. In truth this hat has always been woven in Ecuador, a small Latin American country. The misnomer Panama hat has its origin from the times when the Panama canal was built and the hat was used by the workers to protect themselves from the sun. In Europe and North America the hat is sold for up to 10.000 Dollars, while the weavers in Ecuador earn a tenth or less of the selling price. Normally 200 Dollars a month. They can hardly feed their families while the hat is a symbol of status and authority in the First World. However, still today the hat plays an important part in Ecuador's history and culture. But the art of weaving the hat is dying out. The handicraft is bad paid and not interesting anymore for young people. I am following the Panama hat's trail across Ecuador. We get to know the people who are making the hat, how they live and what role the hat plays in their lives.

Preservando la Memoria del Ecuador
Duration : 342 Seconds

This project aims to strengthen the collective memory of Ecuadorian society of key moments in its social struggle through the digitisation of documents of various types that detail the main events in recent Ecuadorian history. The aim is to stimulate broad discussion about important social processes and to educate the younger generations about historical events over the past 25 years in a non-formal manner through the production of multimedia content. Production of the various materials occurs in close collaboration with those who witnessed the events in order to write history alongside the official version. At the same time, a platform for communication and information is being set up by strengthening the Radio la Luna web site. An on-line radio service is being set up for those listeners outside Quito under bad broadcasting conditions. The project will strengthen ties with independent broadcasting organisations and other information networks throughout Latin America in order to exchange content and lessons learned about conserving and strengthening collective memory but also about the use of ICTs to achieve this. Islam In Ecuador (Part 1 of 2)
Duration : 445 Seconds

The first Muslims settlers were primarily Arabs from what is known to us now as Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Egypt. They emigrated to Ecuador for the same reasons they came to the rest of the Latin world, escaping from World War I and II. These Arab Muslims entered these lands under Turkish passports from the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, these first Arab Muslims were known as "Turks." The settlements were basically in the capital city of Quito and in Guayaquil, the largest seaport by the Pacific Ocean. However, some Muslims went to the coastal side by the Manab, Los Ríos, and Esmeraldas provinces. Ecuador's peaceful environment attracted them very much. The family-oriented society of Ecuador perhaps reminded them of home within an Arab society... ( MORE - www.latinodawah.org )

Tulipe, Ancient Culture
Duration : 148 Seconds

At the heart of an exuberant subtropical forest to the northwest, very close to Quito the capital of Ecuador, lays Tulipe, the ceremonial center of the Yumbo culture. Bordering a river of crystal-clear waters, this is a unique energetic site where ceremonial practices of this pre-Hispanic society took place to honor the sun, their highest deity. The Yumbos were peaceful people dedicated to agriculture and commerce, with a close relationship with their environment and solar cosmovision. After years of patient work the Tulipe site has now been open for visitors, featuring an on-site interpretation center and stone structures like pools or water mirrors of various forms, where the shamans (priests) and yachaks (sage men) performed astronomic observations, ceremonies and cults to the sun and the moon. A hike on a path leading to the main pool is particularly interesting, surrounded by trees and medicinal, ritual and ornamental plants that border the Tulipe River. The pre-Hispanic Yumbo ethnia lived in this region from 800 to 1660; they were mindalaes or merchants, who controlled the crucial trade route between the Pacific Coast, the Andes and the Amazon to the east. Their very interesting ancient mountain paths or coluncos can still be used; these are deep and narrow passageways, covered by entwined vegetation that formed a roof and allowed the merchants to travel under this cool protection. Metropolitan Touring is pleased to introduce the first of its Ancient Sun Culture ...

Islam In Ecuador (Part 2 of 2)
Duration : 544 Seconds

By the mid 1980s, a handful of local native Ecuadorian people embraced Islam overseas. They never heard the word 'Islam' in their own Ecuador. They were highly influenced by pious Muslims while studying at universities in Europe and United States. They came to appreciate Islam as a universal religion, a brotherhood, capable of bringing people from all spheres of life to harmoniously work together in bringing peace. Islam also provided logic that many Ecuadorians never found in Christian teachings. These new Muslims are highly enthusiastic propagators, but swinging against current is not easy...( MORE - www.latinodawah.org )
