"Ecuador's national police and air force have gone on strike against President Rafael Correa's government, reports the Wall Street Journal Thursday. The protests are a retaliation against Correa's administration, which canceled bonuses and promotions for the police and military. The Quito airport was shut down by air force officials and police officials reportedly burned tires in the streets. Businesses and banks across Ecuador are reportedly shutting down due to low security forces. President Rafael Correa, who has been forced to seek refuge in a hospital, said in interviews a couple hours after police lobbed tear gas at him, ""This is a coup attempt... They're trying to get into my room, maybe to attack me. I don't know. But, forget it. I won't relent."""

International Literacy Day, declared by UNESCO in 1965, is celebrated annually on 8 September to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Here is a related story. ESMERALDAS, Ecuador, 8 September 2008 -- In a small village on the banks of the Cayapas River, in the Esmeraldas region of Ecuador, most people are unable to read and write. But that is changing. Many of the schools in the area closed down over 10 years ago, when the teachers who were sent from the capital abandoned their classrooms because of the harsh living conditions in this remote area, but, in March 2002, the lives of community members took a turn for the better when the Catholic Church and UNICEF approached the Ministry of Education to help find volunteers to become teachers in their villages. The idea was to build on local capacity, rather than struggle to convince outside teachers to live and teach in the remote settlements along the Cayapas. With funds from the government, the Catholic Church and UNICEF, 29 schools were re-opened and educational materials were distributed to the teachers and students in the area. www.timesofearth.com Quito - The Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency on Thursday after rebellious police angered by a law that cuts their benefits plunged this small South American nation into chaos, roughing up the president, shutting down airports and blocking highways in a nationwide strike. President Rafael Correa denounced what he called "a coup attempt" as he was hospitalised due to the effects of tear gas used against him by angry police officers. The state of siege puts the military in charge of public order, suspending civil liberties and allowing soldiers to carry out searches without a warrant. Witnesses said there was looting in Quito and in the city of Guayaquil, and that many workers and school students were being sent home. Elsewhere in Quito, uniformed police burned tires in protest at a proposal to cut their bonuses. The Opec-member country of 14 million people has a long history of political instability. Street protests toppled three presidents during economic turmoil in the decade before Correa took power. Members of Correa's own left-wing party are blocking legislative proposals aimed at cutting state costs, prompting him to mull disbanding Congress, a move that would let him rule by decree until new elections, one of his ministers said. Ernesto Gonzalez, head of the armed forces, said that troops remained loyal to Correa. "We are in a state of law. We are loyal to the maximum authority, which is the president," he told reporters ...

This is the mighty Rio Tomebamba that passes through Cuenca, Ecuador, along with 3 other rivers. Taken February 17, 2012. The noise you hear is from the river rushing over the rocky riverbed which is very shallow. The Tomebamba and the other rivers join into the Rio Paute and eventually the Amazon.
