On the evening of August 20th an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft found a small low-level circulation center about 200 miles east of Dominica, associated with a tropical wave that had moved off the west coast of Africa several days prior. At this time, the plane also measured maximum winds of 61 mph (53 kts) at 1400 ft (425 m) and 50 mph (45 kt) surface winds, along with a minimum pressure of 1006 mb (29.71 in). Based on these observations, advisories were initiated on Tropical Storm Irene at 7:00 pm AST. Over the next 36 hours, Irene moved toward the west-northwest and began to strengthen significantly as it approached Puerto Rico. Irene was just below hurricane strength late on August 21st as the center of the storm moved over the island of Vieques and then over eastern Puerto Rico in the early morning hours of August 22nd. Tropical storm conditions spread across Puerto Rico with a sustained wind of 54 mph (47 kts) and a gust to 76 mph (66 kts) reported on Vieques and a sustained wind of 41 mph (36 kts) with a gust to 59 mph (51 kts) reported at San Juan. Widespread tree and powerline damage was reported across eastern Puerto Rico during Irene's passage. Irene produced a significant amount of rainfall over Puerto Rico and trailing rainbands from the storm aggrevated the flooding problems for several days after the storm moved past the island. From the moment we entered Silver Bank, 90 miles off the shores of the Dominican Republic, there were whales EVERYWHERE. Within five minutes of going to the top deck, I saw every whale behavior possible, breaching, fin slapping, tail slapping, tail flukes in the air, blows in every direction. Not ten seconds could go by without seeing a whale and that continued through the whole week. Being out here on the Silver Bank is truly living among whales, just how we like it. Starting with the Atlantic & Caribbean, we go diving with Justine Shapiro in Dominica, and travel west to Turks & Caicos where Megan McCormick goes diving for conch. The next spot on our list takes us to the Outer Banks off North Carolina with Holly Morris, who encounters some very large sharks. We then travel to Florida's Gulf Coast where Holly has a close encounter with a very friendly manatee. We then head over to Africa's east coast to the island of Madagascar, for some wreck diving with Ian Wright. Heading north, we go for a beautiful dive in the Red Sea with Justine Shapiro. We continue our diving trip around the world to the Maldives, where Megan goes on several beautiful dives. From there we hit the Banda Islands in Indonesia's Celebes Sea, joining Mark Crowdy on a dive there. Our journey takes on to the Philippines with Shilpa Mehta. From there we head further east, to the South Pacific, where Ian takes in some wreck diving in the Solomons, and feeds some sharks in Fiji. In Micronesia, Megan goes on several amazing dives in Jellyfish Lake, and she gets very close to some large and gentle manta rays. After that we follow Megan to the fabled Great Barrier Reef, where we see the kind of diving that has made it famous.
