BY JULIA CORDEROY Fatty foods have joined cigarettes and alcohol when it comes to paying taxes in the name of better health. Well, at least in Denmark. Euronews has the word on the new policy... "Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world's first fat tax. Pizza, meat, cheese, butter and processed foods will be subject to the levy. Supermarkets reported empty shelves as consumers stocked up on their favorite foods, while others say they will just start buying abroad." The tax will target foods containing more than 2.3% saturated fat. It hopes to increase the average life expectancy of the Danes - which is below the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) average at 79 years. But how much will this tax cost? Fox News has the answer... "The new tax ... will add 16 kroner ($2.87, or 2.15 euros) per kilo (2.2 pounds) of saturated fats in a product." Some - like the UK Public Health Minister -- argue, taxes aren't the solution. She tells the BBC... "At the end of the day Government alone cannot tax there way out of this problem. It is about personal responsibility, people have to recognise the harm that they are doing to them self by being overweight." But for others, Denmark is setting a good example. TIME says... "According to a 2007 study by Oxford University's Health Promotion Research Group, if this fat tax were instituted in the UK, with tax breaks given on fruits and vegetables, up to 3200 lives could be saved." Gazebo - the Italian singer, who lived for 4 years in Denmark as a child, went to Denmark in April 1984 to perform 'I Like Chopin' and 'Lunatic' in the TV show Eldorado. Gazebo was interviewed in Danish and this is more or less what he said: "He speaks Danish because he has lived in Denmark for 4 years (from he was 7 to 11 years old). His father was a diplomat, so that's why they lived in Copenhagen/Denmark. He also says his favourite Danish food was 'pølsebrød med ketchup' (hotdog bun with ketchup), which I don't exactly think you can call Danish food ;-) Then he tells his first single hit in Italy was 'Masterpiece'".

Food issues are very much in the headlines with European consumers forced to pay more for what they eat and soaring prices causing food riots in developing countries. This comes as the European Union carries out a major review of the Common Agricultural Policy which takes 45% of the EU's budget - mostly paid in subsidies to farmers. There is major disagreement among EU members on how the CAP should be reformed. Denmark, a major food exporter with a long agricultural tradition, wants to see member states follow its approach, including more environmentally sensitive farming, as the Danish Agriculture Minister Eva Kjer Hansen explained to EuroNews.

Danish waters produce high quality seaweed which, until now, has not been exploited commercially as there is no tradition of eating seaweed in Denmark. However, with the recent growth in the sushi market and New Nordic Cuisine, the Danish Small Islands FLAG and the Bornholm FLAG, both situated in remote areas where depopulation and a loss of business opportunities are serious concerns, have identified a new opportunity: the two FLAGs are cooperating in a project to create and develop a range of new local products that use seaweed as a raw material. This project brings together local producers, including fish farmers, mussel growers and processors to promote the sustainable cultivation, harvesting and processing of seaweed. One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the range of partners working together over quite a large area.
