| Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark - world heritage #04 Duration : 177 Seconds Sarcophagi, tombs, memorial stones, flags, family arms or an admiral's tools of the trade. At the back of the choir at the high altar you travel through time and wonder in silence "what should I do now." The Roskilde cathedral... it took about 150 years to build. Catholicism enjoyed it for some few hundred years, after which the people embraced the reformation to never let it go. The new religion became a state religion. The king took over all authority and Denmark slid into the era of Absolutism. New galleries of immortals were designed. The names Chapel of the Magi, Chapel of Frederik the V, Chapel of Christian IV and The Glücksburger Chapel. The reformation had done its work. Crypts, the resting places of numerous royal offspring and perhaps others as well. The Ambulatorium is not for common mortals. Many a bishop looks pityingly on you from the wall. The Roskilde cathedral is thus special, it is indeed the architecture and the interior of the church that tells a lot about the Danish history. That is precisely why this portrait of an era is on the world heritage list. | | Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark - world heritage #05 Duration : 159 Seconds The Roskilde cathedral... it took about 150 years to build. The members of the royal house to follow kept things simple, building the Glücksburger chapel. They were inspired by Byzantine architecture. There are few things more beautiful than lying outside, surrounded by plants from northern Denmark, is what Frederik IX would have thought in 1985. His wife died in 2000, and now shares the space with him. Roskilde cloister was taken down entirely after the reformation. In 1699, however, it rose again from the ashes in Gothic Renaissance style to offer accommodation to single young ladies of aristocratic birth. The cathedral of Roskilde was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and was the first gothic cathedral made of brick. Since the 15th century it has functioned as the mausoleum for the Danish royal family. Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past. If you want to know more about the history of Denmark, this is an ideal place to start. According to old legends the Viking king Harald Bluetooth founded Roskilde. The city's history goes back to the period around 900. The mounds and the old buildings in the area remind us that the Vikings used to live in this region. You cannot miss the cathedral of Roskilde, it is prominent in its presence, towering above everything. | | Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark - world heritage #02 Duration : 186 Seconds You cannot miss the cathedral of Roskilde, it is prominent in its presence, towering above everything. The first version of the cathedral was made of wood and built by Viking king Harald Bluetooth. The king had converted to Christianity and became a loyal follower of the Catholic faith. In 1170 the Danish archbishop Absalon gave instructions to build a cathedral from stone. His followers, however, changed construction plans, they had studied in Paris and were most impressed by the Gothic style. In the end they built a Gothic Roman cathedral. Each king to follow gave the church a personal signature. They rebuilt the cathedral and expanded it step by step. The result was a harmonic whole with characteristic towers, windows, altars and chapels. The Roskilde cathedral is thus special, it is indeed the architecture and the interior of the church that tells a lot about the Danish history. That is precisely why this portrait of an era is on the world heritage list. | | Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark - world heritage #03 Duration : 176 Seconds The church expresses what is carved on the baptismal font "Every Christian believer shall be set free, those who do not believe shall fare ill". An overloaded sentence you would think, one that could give you cold feet. Of course Roskilde is more than a cathedral with a square and a market. It has an urban pride and unmannered character but also art and culture, for instance in the Roskilde museum. After the reformation the old cathedral school became a Lutheran Latin school and still is in a certain sense. Early in the morning is the best time to be here, the gate of Absalon, the episcopal palace, the gardens, the gymnasium... all competing for the most beautiful view or the brightest light. The Danish Muslim culture now represents the 2nd most populous spiritual base in Denmark, after the tax-supported State Evangelical Lutheran Church. This 5-minute film is a perspective, in response to the current, unfortunately very desructive unrest in Denmark. By Bent Lorentzen, biologist, cultural anthropologist and author. Appointed in 2003 as a delegate to the Copenhagen County Social-psychiatric Development Council, he has also worked for the Danish social services as an educatior and ´mental health counselor.______ In 2002, the Catholic Church commissioned Lorentzen to write the English-as-a-second-language book "The Kingdom of Denmark" to prepare foreign clergy coming to Denmark on Danish heritage and customs. The first of his five-part epic Dragons of Nistala series, "Dragon's Moon," was one of two runner ups in the Dream Realms awards. The fantasy series, spanning the 65 million year evolution resulting in the human species, describe the love, battles and quantum-relativity "magic" of these archetypal dragons (dinosaurs?) who survived, hidden, the extinction event of 65 MYA. Virtually all cultures of the world incorporate these dragons, for example, the Chinese myth of how they guard wisdom. The series also describe the arch-angels and -devils of various cultures. The next book in the series, Krona, published by Twilight Times Books, takes us to a time that echoes with the Shiva myth, of water from the heavens ...
