| | Ecofin highlights EU divisions on bank capital rules Duration : 81 Seconds European Finance Ministers on Wednesday met in Brussels to agree on new capital requirement rules for banks. The new law affects over 8000 banks across Europe. It aims to give them more flexibility to protect themselves against future financial crisis. The Danish presidency hopes to reach a deal on the new capital rules among EU member states before the summer. Their proposal would allow national regulators to ask for a 3% increase of capital without permission from the European Commission. Anything above that would still have to get the green light from Brussels. "Basically what we are doing discussing capital requirement is to make sure that the financial sector is sound and solid both in order to avoid crisis but of course also in order to enable the financial sector to provide guarantees, loans, whatever for businesses in order to make them create jobs", said Margrethe Vestager, Economics Minister for Denmark, EU Presidency H1 2012. The EU countries strongly disagree on how flexible they can be at national level in applying the rules. The UK and Sweden claim more flexibility would protect taxpayers from having to pick up the bill of busted banks. But France, Germany and the European Commission want a tougher limit, applicable equally to all member states. A lack of harmonization would lead to imbalances and distort the single market, they argue. The ECB is not supposed to lend to governments, only to banks. Good! So banks get cheap loans from the ECB and they in turn lend it to the governments - the people - at loan-shark rates. Good trick. But where does the ECB get the money to lend to the banks? Does the cartel print it at the Federal Reserve and credit-swap it with the ECB? Nice one. | | 2/2/2012 US Justice Department indicts Swiss-Norwegian bank Wegelin, St. Gallen - Oslo Duration : 208 Seconds ARI Onassis' & Adolf Hitler's Moravian Bankster: Hjalmar von Eggers Schacht (Reuters) - The United States indicted Wegelin, the oldest Swiss private bank, on charges that it enabled wealthy Americans to evade taxes on at least $1.2 billion hidden in offshore bank accounts, the US Justice Department said on Thursday. The announcement, by federal prosecutors in Manhattan, represents the first time an overseas bank has been indicted by the United States for enabling tax fraud by US taxpayers. The indictment said the US government had seized more than $16 million from Wegelin's correspondent bank, the Swiss giant UBS AG, in Stamford, Connecticut, via a separate civil forfeiture complaint. Because Wegelin has no branches outside Switzerland, it used correspondent banking services, a standard industry practice, to handle money for US-based clients. UBS could not be reached for immediate comment. Albena Bjorck, a spokeswoman for Wegelin, declined to comment. Switzerland is seeking a global solution for its entire banking industry, not just the 11 banks under criminal scrutiny. On Tuesday, the Swiss finance ministry handed US authorities encrypted data on bank employees who served US clients suspected of dodging taxes, and said it would only provide the key to decipher the data once the row was settled. news.yahoo.com Swiss Bankers Charged With Hiding More Than $1 Billion From The IRS Three Swiss bankers were charged Tuesday with hiding more than $1.2 billion in US taxpayer ...
