Czech literature teacher Josef unwillingly goes into retirement. Instead of a peaceful family life he chooses a part-time job in a supermarket at the bottle-return counter. The exciting new world that he creates there however leaves less and less room for his wife, Eliska, and she of course has no intention of getting used to it. This love story in old age dramatises the formidable moments in life, but its humour avoids sentiment in the style of a bitter-sweet Czech comedy. EMPTIES is the last in a trilogy from director Jan Sverak and his father screenwriter/actor Zdenek Sverak. The trilogy began with the Academy Award-nominated ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (1992), exploring childhood, continued into adulthood with Academy Award-winning KOLYA, and now comes to completion with EMPTIES, a comic love story about a man facing old age. Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300) In this lecture on the work of Roman Jakobson, Professor Paul Fry continues his discussion of synchrony and diachrony. The relationships among formalism, semiotics, and linguistics are explored. Claude Levi-Strauss's structural interpretation of the Oedipus myth is discussed in some detail. In order to differentiate Jakobson's poetic functions, Professor Fry analyzes the sentence "It is raining" from six perspectives. Franz Kafka 3 July 1883 3 June 1924) is one of the most important and influential fiction writers of the early 20th century; a novelist and writer of short stories whose works, only after his early death from TB, came to be regarded as one of the major achievements of 20th century literature. He was born to middle-class German-speaking Jewish parents in Prague, Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The house in which he was born, on the Old Town Square next to Prague's Church of St Nicholas, today contains a permanent exhibition devoted to the author.[1] Kafka's work, his novels, The Trial (1925), The Castle (1926) and Amerika (1927), and his short stories that include The Metamorphosis (1912) and In the Penal Colony (1914), is now considered among the most influential in Western literature.
