I recently went on holiday to Prague and couldn't return empty handed, so I visited the local shop (Tesco) and bought some treats. There's plenty on offer including flavourless maize balls, tomato soup that isn't what it seems, and Cat Tongues. Not as inhumane as they sound, and actually quite delicious.

The Czechs are fond of eggs and rank second in Europe after Monaco and fifth in the world in egg consumption with 18 kilograms or nearly 40 pounds or eggs eaten per capita per year. The scrambled eggs shown in the video are 100% free run and natural fed chickens. The color of the eggs is completely natural without any artificial means that is sometimes used in commercially produced eggs. Enjoy.

The food you see is good, tastes good and costs only about $4.50 per meal at lunchtime. And that includes soup and the main course. (as of summer 2011). Prices and the exchange rate may change with time but even if they go up a bit it still will be very reasonable. We were so hungry that I didn't start recording until we ate part of the food. The trout and the soup thus don't fully represent their look as they are served. The chicken on marjoram with vegetables lunch meal is still intact, however, and looks exactly as served. Enjoy.

The city itself was founded in mid-thirteenth century and became one of the most important trade and power centres in the region. In the Middle Ages it was the biggest town in Moravia and competed with Brno for the position of the capital. Olomouc lost finally after the Swedes took the city for eight years (1642-1650). The second half of the fifteenth century is what can be viewed as the start of Olomouc's golden age. However, during the Thirty Years' War, in 1640, Olomouc was occupied by the Swedes for eight years. They left the city in ruins and so it ceded its position to Brno. Olomouc was then fortified by Maria Theresa during the wars with Frederick the Great, who besieged the city unsuccessfully for seven weeks in 1758. In 1848 Olomouc was the scene of the emperor Ferdinand's abdication, and in 1850 an important conference between Austrian and German statesmen called Punctation of Olmütz took place here. www.vancesova.com Making Dumplings is not that hard. At least the Czech knedlíky which can be served with dill sauce and eggs as shown in this video. This type of dumplings is more specifically called bread dumplings or houskové knedlíky. The dill sauce served with the dumplings in the video is home made and very delicious. How to make the dill sauce will be shown in one of my future videos. But let's get back to the dumplings. Making dumplings other than the dumplings or knedliky shown, Czech or otherwise, can take a lot more work, like for example gyoza dumplings. The work can be made easier when at least some components or ingredients used are already premixed. This can be a dough mix or even already made dough which can be bought. Even though it is much better to make everything from scratch, it is not always practical to do so due to the time involved. On the package of the dough mix used in this video you can see it says "Knedliky s burizony". That means that there is puffed rice in the mix. There is also a dumpling dough mix that doesn't have burizony or puffed or popped rice in it. IN that case it would just say "Knedliky" on the package. Burizony are used in this mix instead of dry pieces of white bread rolls that would normally be added to the dough. Even if you don't add those, the resulting dumplings will still be good.
