| Creative Small Apartment Idea by Czech Architects Duration : 46 Seconds The obstacle -- just 52m2 of living space to work with. The solution -- a modern, creative design idea that makes the most of every inch! This smart, small apartment design by Czech architecture firm A1 Architects sits on the second storey of a 19th-century building. With little changes to layout, the architects saved most of their budget for this efficient small-space essential -- built-in furniture. The hallway also includes the bathroom -- an interesting layout option -- while the kitchen opens onto the living room, with a view into the bedroom. A small but sweet study enjoys privacy by means of a sliding paper wall. Adding punch to this creative apartment, the architects added bold splashes of color to make a big style statement. | | Eye over Prague - trailer Duration : 94 Seconds Friday 2 July, 7 pm Wren Room, Royal Institute of British Architects 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD Tickets: www.architecture.com or 020 7307 3699 The international premiere of a documentary dedicated to the late Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-founder of London based internationally acclaimed practice Future Systems followed by a debate chaired by Deyan Sudjic, with Eva Jiřičná and other guests. The film featuring Brian Clarke, Eva Jiřičná, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Václav Havel and the team Future Systems tells the story of Kaplický's last grand design. The project for the National Library in Prague called the Eye over Prague is radical, exciting and far enough ahead of its time to provoke a fair degree of controversy. For Kaplický, a Czech-born émigré, it also represents a triumphant return to his homeland, a vindication of his uncompromisingly forward-looking philosophy and, eventually, a tragically poetic ending to his remarkable career. After winning the international competition chaired by Zaha Hadid, the popular and much supported design met opposition from the Czech government and the local administration and the fierce battle began. (Olga Spátová, Czech Republic, 2010, 90'). A following debate, chaired by Deyan Sudjic with Eva Jiřičná and other guests will focus not only on Jan Kaplicky's work, but also on the process and struggles of architects to have their visionary and bold designs approved and built. Standing as a symbolic pilgrimage site in Zelena Hora, Czech Republic is the Church of St. John of Nepomuk. The building was created by a prominent Czech architect and designer who used both Baroque and Gothic styles in its construction. Saint John is known for being a Christian martyr, and gained his acclaim when his decayed remains left only his tongue preserved. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built shortly thereafter when Saint John was sanctified by the Catholic Church. Santini was the one who decided to construct the church using symbols of the tongue and the numbers 5 and 3 due to Saint John's death at age 53. The church is littered with symbolic images, both in its architecture and decor, and is frequented by pilgrims. | | Josef Svoboda - scénograf, Czech artist and scenic designer Duration : 224 Seconds Josef Svoboda (May 10, 1920 in Čáslav - April 8, 2002 in Prague) was a Czech artist and scenic designer. Svoboda was born in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia (today the Czech Republic). He began his training as an architect at the Central School of Housing in Prague. At the end of World War II he became interested in theatre and design. He began to study scenography at the Prague Conservatory and architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts. Svoboda became the principal designer at the Czech National Theatre in 1948 and held that position for more than 30 years. His multimedia installations Laterna Magika and Polyekran with director Alfréd Radok allowed him to be internationally known in 1958. These productions introduced the combination of live actors and filmed projections. Svoboda is also responsible for introducing modern technologies and materials such as plastics, hydraulics and lasers into his designs. In 1967 Svoboda created one of is best known special effects, a three-dimensional pillar of light. This was created by the use of an aerosol mixture which revealed low-voltage luminaries. Josef Svoboda considered himself a scenographer rather than a designer; he chose to show a more holistic, architectural, non-naturalistic approach to design. His 700 plus designs include Insect Comedy (Czech National Theatre, 1946); Rusalka (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, 1958); Carmen (Metropolitan Opera, New York City, 1972); The Firebird (Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen, 1972); I Vespri ... | | Mystical Pilgrimage Baroque Church in Czechia + lovely Czech folcroric songs Duration : 330 Seconds The pilgrimage church of the Birth of the Virgin at Křtiny, nestling in a lovely wooded valley near Brno, is a typical example of Czech Baroque planning. The years 1712-1750 saw the construction of the massive cross-shaped central edifice with its monumental dome and facade surmounted by a tower for which the genial Baroque architect, Giovani B. Santini, supplied the plans. The focus of the church was a spectacular 13th century statue of the benevolent Virgin, the object of the pilgrims´ worship. All this compilation of great baroque monumental architecture with mostly too decorative items contrasts with the naivity and sincere faith of simple poor people doing their pilgrimage manytimes each year more than 400 years, covering the walls of the surrounding corridor by naive folcloric portraits of Mary The Virgin decorated with dryied roses and tables with thanksgivings for treating diseases and preserving against wars.. Božena Šebetovská, Moravian folcloric female singer, comes from south Moravia, the region nearby Brno where folocloric song in Czechia has the most important tradition; she never studied so her voice is completely natural, emotive, full of passion and special Slavonic melancholy...these frolcloric songs are very popular till nowadays and many Czech people sing them together celebrating mariage, pilgrimage or simply for enjoying theirselves... | | Conceptual Architecture: strawbale and container house under construction in Czech republic. Duration : 101 Seconds dingemansarchitectuur.nl The design consists out of two parts, an High-Tech core prefabricated in a shipping container and a Low-Tech construction of wood and straw build on location. The seperation between High-Tech and Low-Tech has many advantages: -The building of the most labour and time intensive part is done near by home. -The bathroom, toilet and kitchen can be used while building the low-tech part. -Not the complications and delays due a large amount of different (sub)contractors A shipping container in your house is a bit extreme maybe, but the High-Tech/Low-Tech can be used in a way that it isn't visible and can result in a more common design. The container is chosen to make a statement and for easy transportation. The doors of the container can change the open floorplan according to the seasons or privacy reasons. MSc. | | Český Krumlov, Czech Republic, October 2009. The Castle and Town. Early Morning Pictures. Duration : 251 Seconds Český Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, best known for the fine architecture and art of the historic old town and Český Krumlov Castle. Old Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction of the town and castle began in the late 13th century at a ford in the Vltava River, which was important in trade routes in Bohemia. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates from the 14th through 17th centuries; the town's structures are mostly in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The core of the old town is within a horseshoe bend of the river, with the old Latrán neighborhood and castle on the other side of the Vltava. During the interwar era it was part of Czechoslovakia. Between 1938 and 1945 it was annexed by Nazi Germany as part of the so-called Sudetenland. The town's German-speaking population was expelled after liberation by the American Army during World War II and it was restored to Czechoslovakia. During the Communist era of Czechoslovakia, Krumlov fell into disrepair, but since the Velvet Revolution of 1989 much of the town's former beauty has been restored, and it is now a major holiday destination popular with tourists from Germany, Austria, and beyond. In August, 2002, the town suffered from damage in the great flood of the Vltava River. Tags :Český, Krumlov
| | Inside the Španělská Synagoga (Spanish Synagogue), Prague, Czech Republic Duration : 99 Seconds The Spanish Synagogue, or Španělská Synagoga in Czech, has to be one of the most beautiful synagogues in the world as the architecture and decoration is simply breathtaking. It was built in 1868 on the site of the oldest Prague Jewish house of prayer ("the Old Shul") and is designed in a Moorish style by Vojtěch Ignátz Ullmann. The synagogue has a regular square plan with a large dome surmounting the central space. On three sides there are galleries on metal structures, which fully open onto the nave. The remarkable interior decoration features a low stucco arabesque of stylized Islamic motifs which are also applied to the walls, doors and gallery balustrades. The interior, together with the stained glass windows, were designed by architects A. Baum and B. Munzberg and completed in 1893. František Škroup, the composer of the Czech national anthem, served as organist here in 1836-45. By reopening the Spanish Synagogue - closed for over 20 years - on the 130th anniversary of its establishment, the Jewish Museum in Prague has completed one of its most ambitious projects to date.
