In 1571, the island was conquered by the Ottomans. The island of Cyprus and its population were generally allowed to practice their religion and culture under the rule of the Ottoman Turks. The island was leased to Britain following the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Cyprus was later annexed by Britain in November 1914 when the Ottoman Empire joined World War I on the side of the Central Powers; subsequently the island became a British Crown colony and came under British rule. The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne marked the end of any notion of a legitimate Turkish claim to the island. Article 21 of the treaty gave the minority Muslims on the island the choice of leaving the island to live as Turks in Turkey, or staying there as British nationals.Both Greek and Turkish Cypriots were happy to identify themselves with their respective 'mother countries'. However, the elites of both shared the belief that they were socially more progressive (better educated and less conservative) and therefore distinct from the mainlanders. Greek and Turkish Cypriots lived quietly side by side for many years.British colonial policies also promoted ethnic polarization. The British applied the principle of "divide and rule," setting the two groups against each other to prevent combined action against colonial rule. Cyprus MEP Eleni Theocharous makes a statement prior to the European Parliament debating the Turkey accession report 2011 Conclusions which will be voted upon on 1st March 2012. The comment made by the MEP involves reports in the Turkish press on 28th February about the discovery of remains in Diyarbakir in eastern Turkey, which she claimed could be related to Cypriot persons missing since the 1974 invasion of Cyprus by Turkey -- at which time many Cypriot persons transported to Turkey as prisoners of war were held at Diyarbakir. Note: There are still many hundreds of missing Cypriot persons whose fate has still not been investigated by Turkey despite the frequent requests for assistance on this highly humanitarian issue. This idea began in 2000 when i was living in New York for a few months, with close friends. My friend Mathew Sprague aka Matheos, was working in a studio in the Village on really cool remixes and since we had begun to collaborate on different ideas, he asked me if i had any of my writings in Cypriot, which is the dialect of my native country Cyprus, a Greek dialect, closer to Ancient Greek. I incidentally did have some writings in this dialect, so i took them to the recording studio and started to experiment. There was a war in 1974, the Turkish invasion which led to our displacement, to thousands of Greek Cypriots' displacement, till today. The war was very traumatic for all of us, especially for all the children which. I was 10 when Turkey invaded, i remember vividly the sirens of war, my grandparents, my mother Athena and my sister Marita running to save ourselves from the bombings, fleeing and going near the British military basis in Derynia to stay till the cease fire. There where 2 phases of the war, the 2nd phase resulting in our displacement. Ever since that day, we have been hoping and praying for our return and the removal of all Turkish troops. Turkish war crimes uncovered in mass graves in Cyprus 11 August, 2009 03:46 (GMT +01:00) International Desk The Turkish army has been accused of war crimes during its illegal invasion in 1974 of Cyprus, which has provoked Greek Cypriots to prepare law suits to prosecute Turkey for war crimes. Following the discovery of human remains in a mass grave confirmed using DNA evidence to be the bodies of five Greek-Cypriot soldiers who appeared in an "iconic" photograph depicting the ferocious military attack instigated by Turkish troops on the Mediterranean island. The families of the Greek Cypriots have said that the evidence found in the mass graves of the bodies to be that of the men presumed missing for 35 years, were in fact murdered in the custody of Turkish troops. "It's a cold-blooded execution," Andreas Hadjikyriakos, a brother of one of the soldiers told Cyprus state TV. "I can never accept this." (Associated Press) The Associated Press in a report said: "The remains of the soldiers and 14 other people were exhumed from an abandoned well in late 2006 near the northern village of Tziaos, Elias Georgiades, an official with the United Nations-led Committee on Missing Persons, said. He said the soldiers' families were informed Friday that the remains had been identified." Greece's Foreign Ministry on Monday also said the latest discovery "confirms ... crimes committed during the invasion." RAF Akrotiri is coping with 2000 passengers every week as the handover from Op Herrick 14 to 15 continues. Up to 2000 passengers pass through RAF Akrotiri every week. From dependants and civil servants flying back for the half term break to personnel coming to and from theatre, the airbase is busy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Strategically, it acts as a forward mounting base for operations in Afghanistan and more recently over Libya.
