On September 27, in Strasbourg, the euro deputies of Lega Nord, Francesco Enrico Speroni -- head of the delegation of Lega Nord and co-President of the "Europe of Freedom and Democracy" group (EFD) at the European Parliament -- Claudio Morganti, Oreste Rossi and Giancarlo Scottà will debate about the last statements of the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay who said that Ankara will freeze relations with the EU, if Cyprus assumes the presidency of the group of nations in the second half of the year 2012, as already set up by the European politics. At the conference will also participate the Cypriot MEP Theocharous Eleni. "An interference with the European politics, because according to the Lisbon Treaty the Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates every six months according to a system that has been decided by the European Council", Mr. Speroni said on the basis of the statements of the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay that has been supported even by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "While people still debate about the entry of Turkey into the EU - Mr. Morganti added- Ankara shows how far away it is from the European standards of democracy". "The EU should definitively close its doors to the Turkish people that with the entrance in Europe would impose their rules and traditions in our western society". Cyprus remains divided to this day. The Turkish army occupies the northern third of the island in violation of international law, and Turkey has illegally settled that land with more than 180000 Turks from Anatolia. Successive US administrations have acknowledged these actions to be illegal but the US has yet to rectify the situation. Why did Washington fail to prevent the invasion and the subsequent settlements despite having the knowledge and power to act? The answer lies in a tangled web of domestic politics, the realpolitik of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the repeated refusal of American presidents to demand that the rule of law and fundamental human rights be upheld in Cyprus. *** Please leave constructive comments below. About the Speech: Sabine Freizer, the Istanbul-based Director of the International Crisis Group's Europe Programme, discussed the prospects of progress in the ongoing UN negotiations between Turkey and Cyprus. With Cyprus taking up the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July 2012, the renewed efforts to reach a deal on the reunification of the island have taken on a wider regional and European significance. About the Speaker: In her role as the Director of the ICG's Europe Programme, Sabine Freizer directs projects covering Turkey and Cyprus, the Caucasus, Moldova, Bosnia and Kosovo. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, and a Masters from the College of Europe in Bruges, which she obtained as a Fulbright Scholar.

Clip 1of4 - Peter Droussiotis welcomes participants at the annual Cyprus Lobby at the British Parliament on 6th July 2010. The meeting begins with one minute of silence in memory of Rudi Vis, long time supporter of Cyprus as former MP for Finchley. Mr Droussiotis is President of The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK www.cypriotfederation.org.uk At an annual event organised by the National Federation of Cypriots in the Palace of Westminster, Parliamentarians addressed members of the Cypriot community and later took questions from the audience, in what amounted to a positive demonstration that political will and commitment among new MPs is strong. The meeting started with Federation President Peter Droussiotis congratulating MPs on their election or re-election and welcoming all guests before paying tribute to Rudi Vis, the former MP for Finchley. A minute's silence was held in recognition of Mr Vis's unfaltering commitment to healing division on the island. Mr Droussiotis then called upon the new Government to meet its special responsibilities to Cyprus, saying "Turkey is Europe's biggest emerging economy, a fact that the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, acknowledged in his first keynote speech after the General Election. He said that Britain will make a particular effort to work with Turkey. Political analysis of the situation in Turkish occupied Cyprus following the 2011 mass demonstrations by Turkish Cypriots against Turkey's policies on the island. This program was broadcast on 24th March 2011by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation featuring veteran political analyst Costas Yennaris in the Anoiktoi Fakelli - Ανοιχτοί Φάκελοι (Open Files) series. This 65 minute item features interviews in English with Turkish Cypriot politicians: Mustafa Akinci ( leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement PDM); Ozdil Nami (former advisor to Mehmet Ali Talat and "Member of Parliament" the CTP Party); Ferdi Sabit Soyer (Leader of the CTP Party); extracts of interviews with Serdar Denktash (DP Party) from July 2008.
