After four days of hard work in relieving the olive trees of their olives we proudly took our box of olives up the mountains to the olive press. No one spoke a word of english but we did ok. Lovely friendly people who I think found us more amusing than anything else and really helped us out.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has met with the leaders of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities in Geneva today to map out a schedule for efforts to reunite the divided island. From July 1st 2012, the Greek Cypriots take over the EU presidency. In effect this date has become a deadline for a deal to be struck. Having clocked up 37 years, the UN's peacekeeping mission in Cyprus is now one of the longest in its history. The military presence in the buffer zone is spread over three sectors. The British control Sector 2, in and around Nicosia. The buffer zone covers about three per cent of the island. While the most crucial part of the UN mandate is to prevent a recurrence of fighting between the Cyprus National Guard and Turkish Cypriot forces, another major function is to encourage the resumption of normal civilian activity in the buffer zone - for example, construction and farming.

For each country, researchers estimated the probability that a fifteen-year-old today will die an early death before the age of sixty. They found that the country with the lowest risk of premature death for women is Cyprus. For men the country with the best rate is Iceland. The study estimated mortality rates for people age fifteen to fifty-nine in one hundred eighty-seven countries. The report appeared in May in the Lancet medical journal. Worldwide, in the last forty years, death rates have decreased nineteen percent for men. But the study found that death rates for women have fallen by thirty-four percent. Chris Murray from the University of Washington in the Pacific Northwest led the study. He says major progress has been made since nineteen seventy in reducing deaths of mothers and children. But he points to growing inequalities in adult mortality -- a "massive spread" between countries with the highest rates and those with the lowest. For example, for men in Swaziland, the difference between the best rate and the worst rate is nine times higher. The study did find improvements in sub-Saharan Africa in the last five years, however, possibly as a result of expanded efforts against AIDS. Stupid Greek Soldiers Explode Cyprus Navy Base An explosion at a military base killed at least 12 people in Cyprus on Monday, blew out the windows of nearby homes, knocked out the Mediterranean island's largest power station and rained metal on a motorway. Cyprus's defense minister and army chief quit hours after confiscated Iranian armaments exploded at the Evangelos Florakis navy base on the southern coast of the island, a popular holiday destination. A government spokesman ruled out sabotage. The blast, which also wounded 62 people, shredded the outer walls of two large multi-storey buildings and was felt for miles in olive groves and farming villages around the base. The olive groves were dotted with white sheets, thought to cover victims. "My tractor jumped about half a meter high," said farmer Nicos Aspros, who was out tilling his field at the time of the blast. "There isn't a house in the community which hasn't been damaged." Windows and doors of Eleni Toubi's small home were blown out and the roof was damaged in Mari, a village separated from the base by a small hill. "It was huge. I fell out of bed and ran to check on the kids," she said. The Iranian armaments were the cargo from the Monchegorsk, a ship Cyprus intercepted in 2009 sailing from Iran to Syria in violation of United Nations sanctions on Iran. International day for Mine Awareness. Since 2004, UNDP has supported the removal of 27000 landmines from the buffer zone and 81 minefields have been declared mine free, creating economic benefits as the land is returned to normal use, including for farming activities. Demining in Cyprus can be considered one of the most successful confidence building measures initiated and implemented by the two communities. Masashi Yamaguchi and Steve Jameson achieved successful laboratory-scale spawning and larval culture with several tridacnid clam species in Palau and Guam in the early 1970's. This work was continued in the mid- to-late 1970's by Hamner, Beckvar, Heslinga and Braley with further larval culture and production of small numbers of juvenile clams. In the early 1980's true mass production of tens of thousands of juvenile clams, along with development of land-based and ocean-based nursery technologies, was achieved at the MMDC by Heslinga, Perron, Orak, Watson and Isamu. Their work continued through the mid-1990's with substantial assistance from Hanser, Fitt and Hastie. Milestones achieved included mass production of all seven species of Tridacnids found locally, the closure of the life cycle of Tridacna derasa in the Ocean Nursery (1984) and the closure of the life cycle of Hippopus hippopus entirely in land-based tanks in 1993. Over two million seed clams and over 100 tons of cultured tridacnid clams were produced on site at MMDC by 1994. More than 100 individuals from Palau and the wider Pacific completed the MMDC Clam Hatchery Training Course, and hundreds of local and international shipments of clams were made for reef stocking, local clam ...
