| From Plunder to Partnership: American Adventures in the Archaeology of Cyprus Duration : 4067 Seconds Dr. Ellen Herscher January 13, 2012 In the late 19th century, the notorious American consul in Cyprus assembled a vast collection of antiquities and sold them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today archaeologists are working together to preserve the island's cultural heritage, recognized as centrally important to the ancient Mediterranean world. Dr. Ellen Herscher, Consulting Scholar, Penn Museum, surveys the most significant American contributions to Cypriot archaeology, with a special focus on the Penn Museum's pioneering excavations in the early 20th century. Sponsored by the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia. Tags :cyprus, antiquities, archaeology

| | SK Cemetery Duration : 412 Seconds Exploring the site of the cemetery of Sotira Kaminoudhia. Modern construction has obliterated much of the site, but the construction of a new road has exposed some formerly unrecorded tombs, including one with artifacts still in situ!! Oh, and I totally misdated that little red pot. The combed decoration and the rim actually suggest that its Byzantine. What its doing in a known EBA/MBA cemetery is beyond me. Also, that jar that you can see in cross section in the wall DOES appear to be Bronze Age. I really can't figure out what's going on there!! | | Lempa and the Baths of Aphrodite in Cyprus Duration : 76 Seconds The movie begins with a shot of the Chalcolithic settlement of Lempa, just north of Paphos in Cyprus, which dates from 3500 to 2500 BC Figurines of pregnant women found in the remains of these round huts suggest that worship of a fertility goddess pre-dated the establishment of the cult of Aphrodite further east, as at PalaeoPaphos at Kouklia. Many tourists, travelling across country from Paphos to the north coast of the Akamas Peninsula, a protected nature area, go to view the springs overlooking Chrysohou Bay, popularly known as the Baths of Aphrodite. On the path, you can see wild Spring flowers and smell and see the jasmine bordering the path to the springs. A wild fig tree grows out of the rocks above the pool. Legend has it that women bathing in the pool can rejuvenate themselves although the rules say No! The video concludes with a panorama of Chrysohou Bay taken from the restaurant on the cliffside run by the Cyprus Tourist Organisation. Very good food too.
