Cats were brought to Cyprus decades ago during a plague of snakes to keep them under control. However, the number of cats were not controlled. Now, hundreds of cats roam Cyprus have no home to go to and are sometimes neglected. This is one of the animal shelters in the centre of Paphos that has its doors open to all cats and is funded by donations and run by volunteers. While we were there, a space of 30 minutes, there were 10 new arrivals. Out of the 20 or so kittens that were there that day, only one survived, which was in fact the one we bottle fed. This is a daily occurrence in Cyprus and is seen as acceptable. The cats in Cyprus generally have to fend for themselves, but in one street there is a Doctor who looks after up to 18 cats at any one time, cooking a warm meal for them in the evening and ensuring that they have biscuits in the morning. He makes sure they are sterilised and has had to treat several of them himself, saving more than one from the jaws of a stray dog or from near death after a road accident. These images are simple straightforward films of the cats that live on the streets. In the winter months there are few people around to feed them. These cats were filmed in three different locations. These animals will not last a year in Cyprus, except if the human race invented an air -condition that can give you - 30 degrees celcius while the outside temperature is easily over 40. Probably this machine exists already but you can be damn sure it's not in that park in Paphos. "ice into the pond" they say. i've seen the Cyprus sun and my skin felt it aswell. these animals have no place in a climate so different than what they are built for. it's as rational as in bringing a polar bear in Cyprus... it's ridiculous. these animals are endangered species and by bringing them to Cyprus they only accelerated their extinction in a slow and painful way. the magesty of Siberia behind electric fences.it's a disgrace. This prooves once again that these people do not care about the animals but for the money. 2012 should be the year where we say no to animal abuse and disrespect in as many places possible on earth. this must stop.

THEATER GROUP MITOS 2008 In a hasten Stories of up and down And the question lies with no answer The theater group MITOS presented the performance Animals that ate people, based on tales, legends and stories from Cyprus, using modern techniques of theatrical art. At first, the material of the performance consisted of tales told by old women and books specialised in this domain such as: Οι Καλικάντζαροι τζαι το παιξίμιν τους by Hambis Tsaggaris, Cyprus animal folklore by Paulos Ksioutas............... Some material was also found in recordings. Concerning the dramatization, no specific text was used that could actually procure solutions and a particular perspective to the performance, but rather a combination of information, pictures, and sounds, revealed during the assortment of the material and the rehearsals.
