Cyprus: Religions have the ability to give Hope
Duration : 79 Seconds

Mario Marazziti, spokesperson of the Community of Sant'Egidio that organizes one of the most significant world encounters between religions, explains the value of religion in a world in crisis from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus:"Religions help discover what is important in life, that is, to work for a world with more justice. Here we must once more learn to live with other religions, because when you are in crisis, each person is tempted to think only in himself, and to see the other as an enemy, a competitor. Religions have the ability to give hope to the men and women of our time, who should work for a different world, because it seems like we are in the aftermath of a world war that has not yet finished."The city of Nicosia is showing great enthusiasm for this encounter that represents a further step toward peace and that the Community of Sant'Egidio has organized since 1987, after the World Day of Prayer in Assisi convoked by John Paul II on October 27, 1986.

Religions United in Cyprus for Peace
Duration : 89 Seconds

The Community of Sant'Egidio and the Orthodox Church of Cyprus are promoting an international meeting of prayer for peace called "The Civilization of Peace: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue". It is the 22nd meeting of the kind that this Catholic community has organized since the first gathering in 1986 in Assisi, convened by John Paul II. The President of the Community of Sant' Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, highlights the relevance of the meeting that will take place from November 15 to 19, 2008. "I hope that this encounter, with the gathering of the pilgrims of peace and their prayers for peace, might help bring down a small part of this wall. On the other hand, the fact that we, a Catholic Community, were invited by the Orthodox Church and that together we promote an event of this nature is very significant as a step forward in ecumenism and for the encounter of these two realities, Orthodox and Catholic."From this Mediterranean island, not far from the Holy Land, a message will be sent to the world:"We wanted to contribute to the understanding of an essential truth: that in the hearts of religions there is a message of love and peace, not one of violence as it has often been in the past; we want to emphasize this idea."

Adhan al-Muhammadi - Shaykh Nazim Haqqani
Duration : 146 Seconds

Rare audio clip of the Adhaan being called by the holy voice of Sultan Awlia Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani al-Qubrusi an-Naqshbandi with an story from his biography. Shaykh Nazim began to spread spiritual guidance and Islamic teachings in Cyprus. Many followers came to him and accepted the Naqshbandi Order. Unfortunately it was at a time when all religion was banned in Turkey, and as he was in the Turkish community of Cyprus, religion was entirely banned there as well. Even the calling of the Adhan was prohibited. His first action after reaching his birthplace was to go to the mosque and call the adhan in Arabic. He was immediately jailed and stayed in jail for one week. As soon as he was released, he went to the big mosque of Nicosia and called the adhan from its minaret. This made the officials very angry and they filed a lawsuit against him. While he awaited the lawsuit, he went all over Nicosia and nearby villages calling the adhan from the minarets. As a result, many more lawsuits were raised, and eventually there were 114 cases pending against him. Lawyers advised him to stop calling the adhan, but he said, No, I cannot. People must hear the call to prayer. The day of the hearing arrived for the 112 cases. If prosecuted and convicted he could receive over 100 years of jail time. The same day, the election results came in from Turkey: a man named Adnan Menderes had been voted into power. His first action as President was to open all mosques and to ...

Cypriot Maronite Arabic- Sanna Part 1
Duration : 535 Seconds

Please give the clip a couple of minutes to start explaining and showing the interviews of these great people. Cypriot Maronite Arabic, still spoken by most of the 130 elderly Maronite Catholics in Kormakiti (Korucam) in northern Cyprus, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Brought to the island by Maronite fleeing Lebanon at least 700 to 1400 years ago, a very unique group of people. For those who are from Cyprus, I would understand what you have against the Turks. But to have something against these people is wrong! It is believed that Cyprus, and Malta were first inhabited by the Phoenicians. Till this day half of the Maltese population has Phoenician DNA. On the other hand, Cyprus does not unfortunately, a very low percentage. This is because the Greeks and many other kinds of people have invaded the island time and time again when on the hand Malta has only seen a hand full of invasions threw out the millenniums, luckily. The Cypriot Maronites come from Lebanon, rather your a Muslim or Christian Lebanese, you are Phoenician and should not be sucked into the media and loose your culture to Arabism. So the Cypriot Maronites fled Lebanon to Cyprus the same way our Phoenician ancestors have done so and how we still do! For example: the summer war. I care deeply for Cyprus and all the inhabitants that belong on the island (meaning get out Turkey)! As for the Cypriot Maronite Community, they should be very proud; speaking a slightly mixed language although still holds the ...
