Talk given by Cuban poet Nestor Diaz de Villegas at the University of Florida on February 17, 2012. Poet discusses his poetics, as well as the relations between poetry and revolution, in light of his latest book "Cuna del pintor desconocido" (Aduana Vieja, 2011). Nestor Diaz de Villegas is the author of more than half a dozen poetry books, which includes "Heroes", "Anarquia en Disneylandia", "Por el camino de Sade", and "Vicio de Miami". He was also the editor of Cubista Magazine from 2005-2006, edited from Los Angeles. He writes frequently for Diario de Cuba, Letras Libres, and other magazines on a wide range of topics such as film reviews, photography, and literature. He was introduced by Gerardo Munoz, graduate student in literature and film at UF.

First International Festival of Poetry of Resistance was held in Toronto from April 24 to 30, 2009. Poets and musicians from around the world performed in Toronto. This festival in Toronto was dedicated to The Cuban Five.

In this weeks signature series on Cuba after Fidel, Worldfocus correspondent Peter Eisner visits Cuba to explore the changing political and cultural climate as Raúl Castro takes on the responsibilities of leading the country. During his visit, he had a chance to sit down with Cuban writer Pablo Armando Fernandez. Pablo Armando Fernandez studied English literature in New York and returned to Cuba after the success of the 1959 revolution. An author of novels and poetry, he found his work celebrated, though it was banned for 10 years. Fernandez shares some thoughts on the revolution and Fidel Castro and recites one of his poems. The result is equal parts didactic, propagandist and experimental, not without flashes of irreverence. The film is focused on the history and the processing of coffee, but manages to incorporate poetry, music, irony and sly challenges to the censors, all within a dynamic and fresh style of montage. —Ralch NICOLÁS GUILLÉN LANDRIÁN Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938 in Camaguey, Cuba -- July 23, 2003 in Miami, Florida) was a Cuban experimental filmmaker and painter. Guillén was an accomplished filmmaker. He made a total of 13 documentaries, although they were heavily censored and prevented from being part of the Cuban Film Industry. In 1964, he was given a special award at the Cracow Film Festival for his film En un barrio viejo. In 1968, his documentary Coffea Arabiga featured the Beatles' song Fool on the Hill as Fidel Castro appeared on screen. That same year, Guillén was accused of plotting to assassinate Castro. The Cuban government interrogated him for six months in Villa Marista. From 1970 to 1989, he was repeatedly jailed ...
