| | The Splendor of Cuba: 450 Years of Architecture and Interiors Duration : 154 Seconds Author Michael Connors discusses his new book "The Splendor of Cuba: 450 Years of Architecture and Interiors"—an unprecedented tour of stunning and architecturally significant Cuban palacios, mansions, and private homes that have been meticulously preserved, previously un-photographed, and inaccessible to visitors. At a time when more travelers are rediscovering Cuba, this lavishly illustrated volume offers a different view of the island's cultural achievements. It presents not the picturesque Cuba of Castro's era, with its derelict buildings and peeling paint, but the opulent world of the Spanish aristocracy of the colonial period. The photographs, shot exclusively for this book, show examples in each area of the island—from the interiors and exteriors in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, and Pinar del R'o to close-up details of courtyards, balconies, galleries, balustrades, grilles, and louvered doors in Trinidad, Matanzas, and Holguin. | | Roberto Gottardi talks to i-SUSTAIN in Havana Feb 2010 Study Mission Duration : 110 Seconds "The Cubanacan Art Schools are five architectural masterpieces of the revolutionary period in Cuba. The Cuban architect Ricardo Porro (b.1925, Camaguey) together with his Italian colleagues Roberto Gottardi (b. 1927, Venice) and Vittorio Garatti (b.1927, Milan) developed the projects in the singular landscape of the former Country Club of Havana's elite. It was Fidel Castro himself who had envisaged this landscape as the perfect site for he project, while enjoying rounds of golf with Che Guevara. The unique qualities of the site and the artistic education programme demanded a unique vision, and no one seemed more appropriate for the commission than Ricardo Porro. (sic. and his team). The Cubanacan Art Schools were conceived and constructed between 1961 and 1965, after which they were partially abandoned because of criticism of the architects within the Ministry, and the great expense of the project, among other reasons." (Excerpt from The Challenge of Change: dealing with the Legacy of the Modern Movement", by Dirk van den Heuvel) Roberto Gottardi is now finishing one of the schools - theater - and reflects upon his work and life, in the context of the evolution of the Cuban revolution, here with a group lead by i-SUSTAIN in Feb 2010. Miguel Coyula, renown Cuban architect and urban planner working with i-SUSTAIN, translates for the group.
