In what may be the world's only coast-to-coast conga line, revelers in Cuban attire congaed from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico to celebrate Key West's colorful Cuban heritage. Led by the Comparsa Key West dance troupe, the conga line proceeded down the mile-long Duval Street from the ocean to the gulf Friday evening. Located just 90 miles from Cuba, Key West welcomed thousands of Cuban immigrants in the 1800s and was the site of a flourishing cigar industry. At the industry's peak, the island boasted nearly 150 cigar factories whose workers produced 100 million hand-rolled cigars annually. The conga line and other weekend events recognize the vibrant culture and customs those immigrants brought with them. Other Key West Cuban American Heritage Festival events include a Saturday night cigar dinner recognizing Key West's cigar-making legacy.

Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards.

Jews in Cuba (from the Encyclopedia Judaica) "The first Jewish group to settle in Havana after Cuban independence (1902) came from the United States. They founded the United Hebrew Congregation in 1906. They were followed by Sephardim, mainly from Turkey, whose communal congregation, Shevet Ahim, was founded in 1914. In the 1920s thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe arrived in Cuba, hoping to use it as a stepping stone to the US Many of them settled in Havana, where they founded the Centro Israelita (Jewish Center) in 1925, together with a large number of social, religious, cultural, and political organizations. In the late 1930s and during World War II Havana became a temporary haven for thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany, using loopholes in Cuba's immigration laws. In May 1939, however, Havana was the scene of the tragic episode of the SS *St. Louis, whose passengers were refused landing and were compelled to return to Europe, where many of them perished in extermination camps. Following World War II the Havana community prospered both economically and socially. In 1951 the Ashkenazi community laid the cornerstone for the Patronato, a magnificent building that symbolized the social mobility and prosperity of Havana Jews. When the Sephardim inaugurated their Sephardi Center, Fidel Castro was already in power. The Cuban revolution of 1959 marked the decline of Havana Jews. The colonial town of Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 in the Spanish territory but was initially settled by immigrants of French origin. It became a trading place for sugar cane, tobacco and coffee. Situated on the Caribbean coast of southern-central Cuba at the heart of the country's sugar cane, mango, tobacco and coffee production area, the town first developed in the neoclassical style.

Cameron Diaz isn't known to talk much about her Latina roots, but in a press day for her new R rated comedy 'Bad Teacher', Diaz opened up about her cultural heritage in detailed form like never before. But while there, the Catholic leader has no plans to visit Cuban dissidents who are fighting for freedom from the Castro regime. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), born to Cuban immigrants, told us in an exclusive interview Wednesday that the pope should make time to see dissidents. Rubio was at Heritage to promote freedom in Cuba, particularly as it relates to technology and Internet access.

The Viñales valley is encircled by mountains and its landscape is interspersed with dramatic rocky outcrops. Traditional techniques are still in use for agricultural production, particularly of tobacco. The quality of this cultural landscape is enhanced by the vernacular architecture of its farms and villages, where a rich multi-ethnic society survives, illustrating the cultural development of the islands of the Caribbean, and of Cuba.

Heritage hosted House Foreign Affairs Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) to discuss President Obama's performance on matters beyond US borders. We spoke to her about the Obama Doctrine, her concerns about US policy toward Cuba and Israel, and why she is trying to reform the United Nations. "What is the Obama Doctrine? Where do you draw the line? How do you choose what country you're going to spend resources on in order to help the people be free and which are not worthy of it? I have not gotten a real sense of what that Obama Doctrine is," Ros-Lehtinen said. "We seem to pick and choose with ease where can we do it more easily." Ros-Lehtinen was born in Cuba and left the island the age of 8 to flee the totalitarian regime of Fidel Castro.
