The Seventh ISABS Conference on Forensic, Anthropologic and Medical Genetics ended today after five days of scientific contents. The event, organized by International Society for Applied Biological Sciences (Zagreb, Croatia) with participation of Mayo Clinic, Penn State University, University of New Haven, Institute for Medical BioMathematics, The Henry C Lee Institute of Forensic Sciences, University of Split, University of Osijek, University of Rijeka, European Science Foundation, Genos--the Forensic DNA Laboratory, Croatian Society of Human Genetics, St. Catherine's Hospital and Eye Clinic Svjetlost gathered more than 600 participants from 45 countries.

Klapa Motovun (Croatia acapella group) Popular form of music from the coastal area of Croatia. Klapa Motovun is an a cappella group that has taken this form of singing to a high level. They come from the beautiful hilltop town of Motovun in Istria not far from the Italian border. Klapa is a form of cappella singing, normally unaccompanied male singers, with strong 'story telling' themes. It has grown out of folk music and liturgical church singing. Croats at almost any gathering are likely to break into klapa singing and it is unusual for an evening in a bar not to end with klapa. Klapa singing as we know it now dates from about 50 years ago. Indeed, in origin the art was to be as delicate and 'piano' as possible and it was music-making for the pleasure of those singing and a few of those round them. Over the last 50 years klapa singing has become louder and more suitable for public performances. The musical texture typical of the klapa groups is that of a vocal quartet with two top parts (tenors) singing in parallel thirds and being referred to as 'primo' and 'shekondo'. The bass was 'bash' who provided the firm bass line while the baritone, usually the most skilled of the four, was supposed to listen to the rest and fill in the harmony by supplying the notes that would fit between the bash and the shekondo. This film speaks about the impossibility of Croatian war veterans to socialise into today's Croatian society, due to the fact that in Croatia -- a country in transition in which the unscrupulous capitalism rules - only a few understand their illness and their needs. The film tells a story about a man 35-year-old, married veteran with three children. He joined the Croatian Army at the very beginning of the war and was not discharged until the very end. He is now unemployed and living in Zagreb with his family. This film is conceived as his intimate confession. Together with two fellow veterans, left only to themselves (and the negligence of the society and government), he does things that to ordinary people seem bizarre and crazy, which help them find their peace and at least give them the appearance of "normal" Croatian citizens.

Goran hails from Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. Goran's story is quite remarkable, he is a multi-instrumentalist, proficient in playing over 30 different instruments and was a notable musician back home in Croatia, and had already spent many years touring the world. He was invited by the Croatian Society here in New Zealand alongside his wife Sanja to teach 'folklore' to generations of Croatians here in New Zealand that have somewhat of a disconnect from the culture of their homeland. Folklore is an umbrella term for music, customs, stories and the traditions of a nation that have been passed down through the generations, and that is exactly what Goran and his wife teach every week to Croatians living in New Zealand - young and old. I'd only met Goran through this project, and I've got to say he's one of the most remarkable people I've met - an incredible musician and a guy that really loves his new country, so much so that he's been touring Maori kapa haka groups through Croatia.

Designed as hommage to Slovenian group Laibach, but primarily in honor of all those people who took to the streets in order to change the situation in the country and society. - The background music was used the composition named "The Great Seal" from Laibach album "Opus Dei", for which I get permission from Laibach to be published and used in this case. Also, the lyrics at the are from the Laibach song "Brother of mine". - Graphics of worker with a hammer at the end of the video is a work of artist Igor Kordej which was also gave permission for publishing. - All video clips are taken from YouTube service in current quality. They belong to different authors, but post-processing is done by me. - The intro text is my personal opinion on the situation in the society and the state, and as such has no connection with authors mentioned above. Bhakti Tirtha Swami starts this kirtana (chanting of the Holy Names) and Sacinandana Swami enters later. As a matter of interest I first met Bhakti Tirtha Swami when he was still Ganashyama Dasa in 1977 at Bhaktivedanta Manor. We stayed in the same room together (old loft) when Srila Prabhupada visited for the last time. I last met him in South Africa around 2001 when we talked personally at the Pretoria and Johannesburg temples. Later I saw him at the Lenasia Ratha-yatra and after that only this video and other tributes and photo's.
