| | CROATIA - DUBROVNIK Duration : 354 Seconds The city of Dubrovnik was based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars. | | Jonathan Franzen in Zagreb, Croatia Duration : 280 Seconds American novelist Jonathan Franzen visited Zagreb, Croatia, on 22 March 2012. He appeared at the VIP jazz club and it was one of the city's most important literary events over a long time. I hope I have managed to catch on tape at least a small bit of Mr. Franzen's disarming charm and humor, as well as a great atmosphere among the fan-filled audience, as he read an excerpt from his latest masterpiece, Freedom (2010), and recounted his encounter with an avid reader (that happens to be US President Barack Obama :)). A truly memorable evening! (Note: The video was shot with a handycam from the back of the Vip Club, zoomed on the lowish stage.) Hatze was born in Split (then Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Croatia) to a family of respected craftsmen from Split. During school he was absorbed with musical events, especially with sacred music and folk songs. Accidentally discovering his exceptional musicality, and with family support, he attended all the performances in the newly opened Municipal Theater in Split. Strong experience of orchestral and choir performances in the Split theater encouraged the 16 year old Hatze to sing at Chapel Mass. During that time he wrote "Misa a Kapela" (in Croatian text), which was performed with great success. Later other Dalmatian school choirs started performing his musical work. | | Macedonian commemoration plague in Gjakovo to honour Croatian Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer Duration : 70 Seconds 22.01.09 Macedonian and Croatian delegations erected a commemoration plague in Gjakovo to honour Croatian Bishop Josip Juraj Strosmaer for publishing the Miladinov Brothers' Collection. Konstantin and Dimitar Miladinov had a major role in the waking of the macedonian people and their nationality. With their teaching activities and the collecting of the macedonian folk literary works, they set the grounds for the modern Macedonian literature. Prof. Dr. Wolf Oschlies on the ethnic identity of the Miladinov brothers: "The "Bulgarian Folksongs" compendium by the brothers Dimitria and Konstantin Miladinov, which appeared in Zagreb in 1861 - has so often been presented as evidence of the Bulgarian identity of the Macedonians, there are a few words that should be said: the collection includes 660 folksongs, exactly 77 of them Bulgarian, the rest Macedonian. At the time of its publication there was no such thing as a "Bulgaria" nor a "Macedonia", since both were part of the Turkish Empire - with the result that the Bulgars and the Macedonians were united by a common interest, interest in liberation from the Turks. Seen from this aspect, the purpose of the folksong collection was a twofold one - to introduce the Macedonians to their own ethnic cultural heritage, and to draw the attention of the learned world to the Macedonians. With this latter goal in mind, Konstantin Miladinov, who had studied in Russia on a Bulgarian scholarship and maintained close links with reputable ...
