Podgora is a village and port in the Makarska littoral, 9 km southeast of Makarska. Chief occupations include farming, growing of vines and olives, seafaring, fishing and tourism. A beautiful beach, plenty of greenery, very good hotels and restaurants make Podgora one of the favourite tourist destinations. Re-creation enthusiasts are offered four tennis courts, as well as various playgrounds for indoor football, basketball and beach volleyball. The Balkan conflict has been over for 14 years,but Croatia is still struggling with its legacy. There are around two million still buried somewhere in the ground.They've killed some 1400 people and maimed thousands more since the end of the war. In the northeastern provinces of Baranja and Slavonia,the existence of the mines is hitting the farming and the tourist industry. But the government in Zagreb is not overly concerned. Tourists continue to flock to the coastline -- where there is no threat. The residents of the region are now hoping Brussels will help.

Makarska is a town, port and tourist centre in a large cove, enclosed by Cape Osejava in the south-east, and the Sveti Petar Peninsula, at the foot of Biokovo, in the north-west.Economy is based on farming, viniculture, growing and processing of olives, food processing, processing of synthetic materials, seafaring, fishing and tourism. Makarska is the tourist centre of the riviera of the same name. Nice long beaches, a lot of greenery, olive-groves and pine forests at the contact point between the sea and the mountain range, cultural and historical monuments, a number of hotels, restaurants, sports and recreational facilities - all this makes Makarska a very pleasant destination. Athletes and recreation enthusiasts may use numerous playgrounds, facilities and equipment for all kinds of sports on the ground and in the sea. The tennis camp has nine clay courts, one colour set court and two lighted indoor clay courts. This modern tennis centre, situated close to the famous beach of Makarska, is often the venue of important tennis tournaments.

Ranging in altitude from 367 m (Koranski most) to 1279 m (Seliški vrh) above sea level. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979, in recognition of its "outstanding natural beauty and undisturbed production of travertine (tufa) through chemical and biological action". The park represents a phenomenon of karst hydrography. The park harbours a grand collection of waterfalls, gallery of lakes, forest and diversity of animal life. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. The sixteen lakes which are formed by natural dams of travertine are separated into upper and lower lakes. About eight km of pathways and wooden walking trails around lakes are accessible to visitors. Trails are descending from an altitude of 636m to 503m above sea level.
