September 2, 2010 Dear Sarah and Goran, We hope that both of you are in good health. We heard that Antonia will soon have a baby brother. That's so nice that she'll have a playmate, as the big sister. September has arrived and autumn is just around the corner. We've had a good summer and also had a vegetable garden which has given us lots of good tomatoes. We're coming to Colorado in early October and are looking forward to seeing everyone. We're mailing to you a CD with photos that were taken from slides during the years 1953-1978. Your dad mentioned that you were interested in having these pictures. Let me give you some information regarding the chronology. In 1953 my dad, John Mance (your great grandfather Jacob's brother) and my mother, Cecilia, and I travelled to Europe. They were interested in seeing the "old homeland." We travelled from New York City, across the Atlantic on the original Queen Elizabeth, Cunard Line. It took 5 1/2 days. We disembarked in Cherbourg, France. After a brief visit in Paris, we took the Simplon-Orient Express train, across several countries, to Zagreb, Croatia. It was then part of Yugoslavia. We returned on the Queen Mary, now docked in Long Beach, CA as a tourist attraction. My mother's family and her birthplace was in Petrinja, which is near Sisak, around 30 km. from Zagreb. Ivo Josipovic, president of the Republic of Croatia, visited San Pedro on Saturday, where he was honored at a 5 pm dinner at the Dalmatian-American Club, 1639 S. Palos Verdes St. Ivo Josipovic stopped in San Pedro, CA as part of a 10-day visit to the United States. It is the first visit of a Croatian head-of-state to the port community, which is home to an estimated 30000 people of Croatian heritage. The local dinner was by the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Los Angeles, the Croatian National Association, the Croatian-American Club of San Pedro and the Dalmatian-American Club. The Kornati archipelago of Croatia, also known as the Stomorski islands, is located in the northern part of Dalmatia, west from Šibenik, in the Šibenik-Knin county. With 35 km in length and 140 islands, some large, some small, in a sea area of about 320 km², the Kornati are the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. From northwest to southeast (from the island of Balabra to Samograd), and from northeast to southwest (from Gangarol to Mana) they strech for 13 km.
