In February, Philadelphia's Bridgette Mayer Gallery will present "Paintings," the first US showing of artist Federico Herrero's work. Herrero, from Costa Rica, won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale and participated in the 2011 Art Basel fair in Switzerland, where he painted the exteriors of traditional fishing huts -- known as Fischergalgen --along the river Rhine, providing a "colorful and festive spectacle for passerby."

The traditional oxcart, or carreta, is Costa Rica's most famous type of craft. From the mid-nineteenth century, oxcarts were used to transport coffee beans from Costa Rica's central valley over the mountains to Puntarenas on the Pacific coast, a journey requiring ten to fifteen days. The oxcarts used spokeless wheels, a hybrid between the disc used by the Aztec and the spoked wheel introduced by the Spanish, to cut through the mud without becoming bogged down. In many cases, oxcarts were a family's only means of transport and often served as a symbol of social status. The tradition of painting and decorating oxcarts started in the early twentieth century. Originally, each region of Costa Rica had its own particular design, enabling the identification of the driver's origin by the painted patterns on the wheels. By the beginning of the twentieth century, flowers, faces and even miniature landscapes appeared beside patterns of pointed stars. Annual contests were arranged to reward the most creative artists and are still held today. Each oxcart is designed to make its own 'song', a unique chime produced by a metal ring striking the hubnut of the wheel as the cart bumped along. Once the oxcart had become a source of individual pride, greater care was taken in their construction, and the best-quality woods were selected to make the best sounds. The ending of "The Costaricartolution" Children's Mural Tour is an upcoming Documentary created in collaboration with two talented film makers in San Jose. The three minute special on the Costaricartolution was aired on Canal Siete( Chanel 7) national News Chanel. This upcoming 30 min-1 hour film will be produced over the next 3-4 months, and will be the cinematographic documentation of the journey of Artdude and Documan. Documan is the videographer/Cinematographer/ Cousin, Robert Block. Artdude is Artdude. The culmination of this was the final mural/Installation/exhibition/Gift at El Museo de Los Ninos. We hung the canvas from the side of the Castle/previous penitentiary now beautifully vibrant National Children's Museum and National Gallery: El Museo De Los Ninos, Galleria Nacional. Humans of all kinds came to the painting of the communal mural. Families and children started the mural off, but its contributors grew. Members of the staff added to it, as did local homeless people and even a finishing police officer painted! Love for diversity is love for humanity unification through communal tangible creation making.
