He has published eleven books of poetry, many of them recipients of literary awards, including the David Prize (Cuba, 1980), the Plural Prize (Mexico, 1983), the EDUCA Prize (Costa Rica, 1995), the Renacimiento Prize (Spain, 2000), the Fray Luis de León Prize (Spain, 2005) and the Leonor Prize (Spain, 2006). His poems have appeared in The Kenyon Review, Denver Quarterly, Mid-American Review, Chelsea, New York Quarterly, The Literary Review, New England Review, Circumference, Salt Hill, and many others internationally. La Banda Sonora De Una Película Que Jamás Vas A Ver (literally "The Soundtrack of a Movie You Are Never Going To See") is a musical project of Costa Rica made by the SINABI (Sistema Nacional de Bibliotecas) and is an album which songs are inspired on some of the most famous books of costa rican literature. OTS and Duke University sponsor the semester on Global Health, a program designed primarily for pre-med, biology, public health, and natural science majors to be trained in research in the areas of tropical medicine and public health in Costa Rica. Our 15-week undergraduate semester abroad program emphasizes the scientific, intercultural, and social aspects of global health, tropical medicine, public health, ethnobiology, and research topics in these subjects. Instruction focuses on the internationally-recognized OTS method of field-based, hands-on learning. Lectures, readings from primary literature, and discussions are also integral components of the program and provide the conceptual framework for discussion, analysis, and interpreting field observations and research. This semester long program will take place for the most part at two of the Biological Stations of the OTS, Las Cruces and La Selva, located in different life zones of Costa Rica; as well as in clinical settings and primary care facilities (EBAIS) within Costa Rica's social security system, in both the urban and rural areas (including Indian Reservations). In addition, students will visit different research facilities, museums, national parks, market places, agricultural farms, and other facilities. The Players Theatre and Literally Alive Present: Free Summer Theatre: TICO TALES Literally Alive has been producing original musicals based on children's literature in New York City for over 12 years. This summer, Literally Alive will join forces with the historic, Off-Broadway, Players Theatre to present three weeks of free family theatre. Tico Tales, a musical adaptation of traditional Costa Rican folk tales, has been selected for the summer production. The creative team, Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell, who have written 8 original musicals together, chose this piece after bringing their production of A Christmas Carol to Costa Rica this past December. Inspired by the beauty of the nature, the warmth of the people and the rhythms of their community, Sgouros and Bell returned to New York excited to share a theatre piece that embodies this rich culture. Costa Rican music is known for embracing percussion instrumentation. The national instrument is the Marimba. Michael Sgouros, the composer of the team, is a percussionist and each of Sgouros and Bell's eight musicals have featured a percussion score. This unique musical theatre orchestration allows three live musicians to create a wide variety of music and sound effects for the productions.
