Congo's Forgotten War
Duration : 441 Seconds

April 2008 Every month, another 45000 people are killed in the DRC, in a war that was supposed to have ended five years ago. Congo remains one of the world's most dangerous and isolated places. "We live like apes. Our future is to die", states one 18 year old. Despite the agreed ceasefire, war is still raging here. At the Cheverie refugee camp, 5500 families share one tap. There is no toilet. "Our life here is pitiful", laments one woman. Bands of militias roam the countryside, killing civilians and burning down villages. Gang rape has become the most common weapon of war. Sifi, 18, was kidnapped by rebel soldiers. Months of repeated rapes left her paralysed and incontinent. She became pregnant but her baby was stillborn. And it's not just young women who are at risk. Even toddlers and septugenarians have been raped. Many of those who survive contract HIV or are ostracized by the community. "When my husband realised I'd been raped, he abandoned me", states Odette. "He abandoned our two children as well". The rebels prevent food supplies reaching refugees, leading to acute malnutrition. Every month, more than 20000 children die from hunger or easily preventable diseases. The war in Eastern Congo has gone on for so long, few can remember anything else. Every attempt to bring peace has failed.

[Channel 4 News] Horror of Congo's forgotten war 2008.03.27
Duration : 476 Seconds

By Jonathan Miller: "The war formally ended five years ago - but the fighting didn't. It just carried on, ignored by much of the world. One shocking statistic: every single month 45000 people are killed. The Democratic Republic of Congo remains one of the most dangerous and isolated places on earth. The accompanying video contains photographs and film which offer a rare insight into Africa's forgotten war. They show the suffering of civilians and the use of rape as a weapon of war - against children as young as two. Congo's recent history had offered hope: a fresh peace deal agreed in January between the Congolese government and the majority of the rebel groups operating in the eastern Kivu region, next door to Rwanda. The aim was to end months of violence that has displaced tens of thousands of people. But many of the rebel groups who signed the deal have been blamed for the continuing atrocities. One of the most notorious of them - the FDLR, or Interahamwe - did not participate in the act of engagement deal. The FDLR is made up of Hutus who crossed the border after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Photographer Susan Schulman has just returned from north Kivu with still and filmed footage, along with other material from Medecins Sans Frontieres."

Congolese Warlord Lubanga Found Guilty of War Crimes
Duration : 76 Seconds

The International Criminal Court on Wednesday convicted Congolese militia boss Thomas Lubanga of war crimes for using children in his rebel army, in the tribunal's first ever verdict. Lubanga, 51, was found guilty of enlisting child soldiers to fight for his militia in a gold-rich region during the bloody four-year war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which ended in 2003. "The chamber reached its decision unanimously that the prosecution has proved Thomas Lubanga guilty of crimes of conscription and enlisting children under the age of 15 and used them to participate in hostilities," presiding Judge Adrian Fulford told the Hague-based court, set up in 2002.

The fighting was concentrated in the east, where entire rural communities were either massacred or became refugees. After years of being kept alive by international aid many are finally returning to what were once their homes and farms. Innovative agricultural methods may hold the key to ending DR Congo's ongoing cycle of poverty.
