We sent some amateur cryptozoologists out there to look for the creature the local pygmies call Mokele-mbembe, or "he who stops the flow of rivers." Congo (Dem Rep) has many beautiful landscapes, with lakes and forests, waterfalls and wildlife. However, this is a vast country, with an almost non-existent transport infrastructure. It is mired in conflict and a long and intricate history. A five-year civil war from 1998 to 2003 resulted in the deaths of around 3 million people, not only through the fighting itself, but also through hunger and disease.

April 2005 We travel into the heart of DRC along the 1700 km Congo River. It's a journey that provides a rare insight into a country still struggling for peace. There's a saying in the DRC: if the river is happy, the country is happy. "The river ensures the unity of the country," explains director Jean Casongo. "It feeds us and it unifies us." But since the war, the river boat industry has collapsed. Now, the government hopes to revitalise it again.
