Coco Mobuli's boldly chromatic compositions portray African daily life, particularly images of women, deities, folklore, spirituality and a strong cultural faith in the hereafter. A fine artist working with linseed oil and tube paint to render paintings which nod equally to Impressionism, Realism and Idealism, Mobuli's ultimate goal is to use pictorial art as a means of developing solidarity within the far-reaching African Congolese community. Each work is the result of an intensive three part process involving draft, execution and highlighting. Interested in the transcendental links between visual art and the natural environment, these contemporary paintings on burlap linen or hemp canvas achieve a neo-primitive and totemistic presence through their constitution of solid lines, open spaces and archetypal symbolism. Mobuli plumbs ancestral sensibilities, embracing 'God-Earth-Man' as a type of universal creative trinity. Coco Mobuli was born in 1974 in Kinshasa, capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, is of Congolese nationality, and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa.

It's a little quicky 'one off' multi-track project recorded years ago in my room Davenport, Ca.. The pictures are a collage of paintings, pictures and pictures of paintings. Alice Neel painted most of the straight up portraits, while various portraits created in oil by my mother can be seen on the walls at times.

Quinn, senior project manager in the Museum's Department of Exhibition, recently traveled to the eastern Congo basin to visit the exact site depicted in the Akeley Hall of African Mammals' mountain gorilla diorama. Like the artists on Carl Akeley's 1926 expedition, Quinn used field sketches and paintings to document the area's flora and fauna, recording the changes that have taken place over the last 80-plus years. In this eight-minute highlight video from a recent talk at the Museum, Quinn shares finished works, including a panoramic plein air painting. Zoe Morris, Yuzhu Liu, and Kelly Mackie presented "Motivation and Art" at the Michigan State University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum on April 13, 2012. Their abstract: Our objective for this topic was to explore the relationship between art and science. This was done through our study of Desmond Morris' books, his research on the famous chimpanzee Congo, and his paintings. We also explored the methods of elephant painting, as well as briefly researching childhood finger paintings and comparing that to the work of Congo and the elephants. We found it was hard to make a distinction between Congo's paintings, the elephant's paintings and the children's finger paintings. Our conclusion about art and science can best be summed up by Morris' quote "People today are not scientists or artists...they are explorers or non-explorers. Painting is no longer a crafts; it is a form of personal research. I do not think of myself as being part scientist and part artist but simply as being an explorer, part objective and part subjective."
