Since around the fourteenth century this heroic narrative has been handed down the generations orally within the Mongo People, and has now been published in English for the first time. The translation captures the African imagery, idiom and forms of literary expression. With the themes of peace, unity and reconciliation at its centre, the author encompasses and depicts the rich cultural heritage of the Mongo people. The narrative is simultaneously an expose of the great deeds of a legendary Mongo hero and the fascinating socio-historical, economic and religious context in which the Mongo have lived and continue to live.

Years of conflict have ravaged all five world heritage sites in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. All are now on the List of World Heritage in Danger, having suffered from massive poaching and loss of habitat. A high-level meeting in Kinshasa will take place on 14 January to draw up a rescue plan for these irreplaceable natural treasures.

Masks are traditionally used in Africa in fertility and initiation rites and funeral and religious ceremonies. The masks are dramatic portraits of spiritual beings, departed ancestors, and invisible powers of social significance. Masks were made to conform to traditional standards and always used in ceremonies by trained performers. The masks were used in combination with full-body costumes and body paint. The complex ceremonial events expressed important social, religious, and moral values for the whole community.
